"I thought you were tired of me and were going to drop me off at home." I commented, uncomfortable with Dan's preference for shortcuts and back roads. "Where are we going?" "There's a clearing up ahead that's good for me to test my butcher knife, y'know? I'll slice you like a meat loaf. I'll soak you in gasoline and drop a lighter. Accidentally." Dan said this with chilling nonchalance. His impassive expression sent a chill down my spine, leaving me breathless, unsure if he was joking or not. Our Father who art in Heaven… Dan glanced at me sideways with a twisted smile. I slid back in my seat and closed my eyes to pray more earnestly. I heard an energetic laugh and opened one eye to see him almost crying with laughter. "For fuck's sake, Ry! You too?" He exclaimed, and laughed again at my terrified face. "Does everyone think I'm crazy now?"

Children shouted with joy and ran in between the various different stalls packed with anything and everything a person could desire.From clothes, to art supplies, artwork from local artists that I had to restrain myself from oogling too long at, fresh grains, rice, and beans. Roasting vegetables, peppers, meats, and other foods that made my mouth water. To see all these people enjoying life and each other eased some of my guilt. And renewed me with a sense of what exactly we are fighting to preserve. And the joy - * end of text

#WIPSnips The word for November 10th is 'local', but I'm going with 'village'. 'The Book of Ashes', Chapter 9 (again) and carrying on a couple of paragraphs from yesterday's WIPSnip. A 'Hercules' is a brand of bicycle. Jenny Birdfoot is supposed to be hiding in Paul's shoulder bag and keeping quiet.
Pulling the Hercules up on to its stand outside the village post office. He drew in a deep breath. Now all he had to do was drop off the day's mail, collect a certain mysterious letter and head back to Harpham House without anybody seeing Jenny Birdfoot. Walking in the door he was immediately enfolded in the subtle mixed scents of ink and office gum with delicate overtones of worn linoleum, dust, blotting paper and old varnish. The post office's public interior space was not much larger than the kitchen of some of the flats he'd rented in London and the décor in yellowing flyspotted cream paintwork, worn maroon matchboarding and rubbed thin varnished woodwork would be dubbed 'shabby chic' by some of his former city friends, but here it was just age and quiet neglect.

“Since we’re on the topic of speech, you’ve got a bit of an accent.” Peter noted, as if to justify the misunderstanding. “Sometimes it gets stronger, in a sort of pattern.” “Oh! So you even noticed a pattern? Go on then, share the findings of your research on my accent.” I did my best impression of the most stereotypical regional accent from back home. Even I cringed at how bad it sounded and silently apologized to everyone I’d just offended with that ridiculous attempt. “When you talk to Jonathan or Vanessa, you don’t even try to hide it.” “I never hide it.” I countered, matching Peter’s tone. “When you’re trying to be funny.” “‘Trying’? Ouch.” “And also when you’re caught off guard.” Peter finished, ignoring my protests.

"Take the picture." He ordered. I obeyed, swallowing the urge to complain that they preferred a boring concrete wall to using the rainbow as a backdrop. Dan positioned himself in front of the camera, slightly tense, his hands in his pockets as if he realized he didn't know what to do with them. Peter joined him next, running his hand through his wavy hair, that melancholy reminder of what Dan's natural hairstyle might have been if protocol hadn't imposed a buzz cut on him. He took a step towards his brother, which was enough to soften his posture. He placed a hand on his shoulder, giving the frame the naturalness it lacked. I pretended to test the best composition on my phone screen, but in reality, I was studying them. The complicity between the two had a tragic flavor, or perhaps I was reading too much between the lines. Dan's words continued to echo inside me. I felt a knot in my stomach imagining that this could simultaneously be the first and last happy, relaxed photo of the two of them for a long time.

That vertigo mixed with a morbid curiosity that keeps your eyes glued to the ground below?” I looked at Dan, who didn’t seem to be listening to me at all. “The closer I get to you, the more aware I am of my fear of heights. And yet, I step right up to the edge of the skyscraper and look down. I want to see the world from above. It helps me realize how small my problems are when put into perspective.” “I was about to make the mandatory joke about Jona, but I think you’ve already crossed the line.” Dan went back to his rigid posture. “Using me to put your stress in perspective? Fuck off.” “I don’t want to use you. I want to understand you.” “You want to get fucked. Seriously. All I ever see is you hurting yourself in the process.” He buried his face in his hands and muttered. “Why do I only surround myself with people who harm themselves?” “As if you don’t do the same.”

“Was it your father who bought Pantaloon?” Kraus asked, leaning his body slightly toward me. “Y-yes.” I swallowed hard. “He’s involved in the equestrian world as well?” I knew where the conversation was headed. I didn’t pay attention to what my grandfather answered, once he realized there was no point in waiting for a reply from me. My heart weighed heavy in my chest, filling my ears until nothing they said could reach me. I fixed my gaze on the arena before us. The white Range Rover parked by a pair of obstacles blinded me. “My condolences.” The stiffness of his accent only made the words sound harsher. It had been so long since I’d heard that. I don’t even know what one is supposed to say back anymore. I nodded. A low-key movement that said nothing of the dark cloud they’d just blown over me.

“Come on, love!” Vanessa shouted, unafraid of throwing him off balance. Suddenly, the jump looked twice as high. Kris seemed to soar in slow motion before my eyes, the loose stirrup catching the sunlight. An almost horizontal leap. I imagined myself there, leaning over the mare’s neck, looking down at the ground below. A shiver ran through me. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to mentally get off that horse. That’s not me up there. The ground trembled, reminding me my feet were still firmly planted. Another clean jump. In a long, stretching gallop, they moved on toward the final fences. I glanced at the timer. It seemed impossible to beat the record, but nothing was lost yet. A break in the rhythm of hooves. Two strides. Another pause. Applause between strides. Another pause. The green-and-white triple was already behind them. Before the applause came a shared sigh of relief. I looked at the clock. 72.61 seconds. An excellent time, but 0.2 seconds too long to dethrone Amanda.

WIP snippet from the upcoming novel Moonfallen that reads: I simply took a deep breath and nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be." I opened my door, leaving him still sitting in the car. My stomach flipped, and I could feel my palms start to sweat, but I'd done enough cowering for one day. I had just about enough of my nerves being fried, so I was going to put on my best brave face and act like I was anything more than a scared human whose fate dangled in the hands of strangers. Thorne got out behind me and caught up to me as I started hobbling toward the house. What I didn't expect, however, was the feeling of his warm fingers trailing down my wrist and moving to slide into my palm. His large hand engulfed mine, the movement prompting me to look at him like a startled prey animal. Despite my surprise, I couldn't deny that feeling his hand around mine helped still my racing heart. It made me feel just a little bit safer and gave me the confidence to face whatever came next. Even if that ‘whatever came next’ was my death.

She woke again in full daylight. The tent was uncomfortably warm in the direct sunlight. Groggily, she collected her belongings, and followed a faint trail through woods, nibbling edible leaves along the way. It was late afternoon when the trail ended into a wide, slow moving stream of liquid mud. The kind of water that made you dirtier to swim in. Beyond the mud stream, trees grew around ruddy metal jutting out in jagged, crumbling peaks. Swamp gas swirled and reeked, embracing angular rusty forms in contrary curves. The solid and the translucent. One sinking into the Earth, one rising up from it.

"Where do you want to go?" He asked me when we stopped at the intersection with the road that borders the neighborhood. "Y-you're the one who invited me. Besides, you're the one driving." I passed him the responsibility of deciding. "It's not like I know what I'm doing in a car alone with you after all this time." "You're free to get out. Just don't do it while we're rolling." We set off again with a roar disproportionate to the acceleration. Dan decided to turn left, which meant we were going to stop in the city center. I was distracted by the view out the window. The continuous dark gray of the road transformed into an abstract trail as we moved, interrupted now and then by white blurs. The rest were streets monotonously delineated by brick facades, occasionally illuminated by flickering signs. Only further ahead would the surroundings gain a more lively and colorful atmosphere.

When editing, I search for overused words and replace them. It's too early for that in my WIP, so there were too many occurrences of "trail". I kept an early one to show Ron's entitlement and Melanie's insecurity

Leaning against this same railing was our father, still in uniform, but with a radiant smile. He bent down as soon as he saw us. He laughed as he called out to us. We ran to him as if there were no tomorrow and almost knocked him over in the process. That hug was the best thing in the world. It didn't matter if it was raining, if it was cold, if I was tired of asking my brother to relax. Everything was fine. It seems like a memory from a distant life. That's why I don't blame Peter for getting lost between parallel universes. The more we think about it, the more fictional the past becomes. It was just a dramatic movie we saw, a story we were told. I ran my hand over the metal of the railing respectfully. The chipped paint made the texture uneven. Time corrodes any evidence of the presence of those who pass through here. But I know he was here.
