I don't say this enough but I think it all the time: a lot of my early success in webcomics was luck! And even the stuff that wasn't luck relied on systems that aren't there anymore. (RIP webrings and google reader.) So I very openly tell people that my strategy only works with a time machine.

What if the MAGA oligarchy so thoroughly infects, corrupts & destroys every traditional news outlet & social platform, that truthful, legitimate journalism can only be found on the individual websites of gutsy reporters surviving on micropayments, linked together with 1990s style "webrings"?

Seeing how shitty social media and search engines have become, we may be heading back to independent websites and webrings.

I'm trying to think of how I got to SMBC. I think it was a link from xkcd, same for how I got to QC and Dinosaur Comics. Webrings to rule them all.
Penny Arcade I specifically remember because my college dorm hall leader (in his last year) was burning through his print quota by printing out PA.

HUGE website update-
For the main page, I added an embedded Ko-fi tip page, webrings I’ve joined, and embedded guestbook. Still need to work on a good chunk of the OCs section. And the fan art and fun stuff pages are completed!

The real solution is we all have self hosted blogs and bring back webrings

If I'm musing: eventually huge "town square" social networks like this will become obsolete. There will be a return to self-owned, self-hosted content sites, tied together (a la webrings!) via something like atproto or activitypub.

it's still the best idea for everyone to make a personal website and possibly just bring back shit like webrings again. we need another search engine that works but, in the meantime, there's neocities.org for a free website

It's imperative not to give into the "hose drinker" impulse w/age, but when I first got online I was dinking around in Geocities learning some useful basic HTML. Now when you first get online, you are opting into the prodromal phase of severe mental illness. Bring back webrings to heal our children
I just came across *the* most Geocities site to ever exist. You want to see this one, I promise. web.archive.org/web/20010722...

Before search became everyone's default internet starting point, we had curated topic directories, webrings, etc. I'm a bit surprised they haven't come back, now that aggressive monetization (by all parties involved) has ruined search.
