Why is @johnswinney.bsky.social persisting in betting all our futures on the slim prospect of a persuasive SNP majority?
Constituency Vote? List Vote? What's the difference? The voting system used in Scottish general elections was explicitly set up by the Labour UK government in 1998* to try to prevent an SNP majority in the Scottish Parliament. In the 2016 election, for example, the SP won 59 of the 73 constituency votes seats, whilst the Conservatives and Labour together won only 10 seats. It is split into two votes.. • a Constituency vote similar to Westminster's First Past The Post' system (deciding 73 Holyrood seats). • and a Regional, or List vote, which uses the Additional Member System to select extra MSPs from a party list (deciding 56 Holyrood seats). A party may stand only for list seat votes if it wishes. The system is designed to ensure that the more constituency seats a party wins, the more their list votes are 'devalued' and the harder it becomes for it to win list seats. By contrast, the value of list votes for parties that win fewer constituency seats is increased. However, due to their constituency vote success, the SNP's 956,587 list votes were devalued' by the system and won them only 4 additional list MSPs, whilst the Conservatives' and Labour's combined vote of only 4,000 more votes, got them 45 additional MSPs. So in 2026, assuming that the SNP is polling very well on the costituency vote, the best advice to any pro-independence supporter wanting to maximise their pro-indy vote is to give your regional list vote to the pro-independence party you believe in, but only if you are convinced that that party has a realistic chance of actually winning a seat. *Daily Mail, 23 April 1997 In a nutshell, the better a party does on the Constituency vote the less its List vote counts
