#umap
I have been playing with the open source "UMap" along with CAWM & DARE Maptiles of the Roman Empire to help people make their own maps for websites, teaching, and books using ancient world data. Is there any interest in learning the basics of DIY maps? umap.openstreetmap.de/en/map/ancie...

Space DJ turns genre embeddings into a playable galaxy—pilot a ship, the music follows. 🚀

Key stats
768→128 PCA compression; 3D UMAP projection; three.js rendering; autopilot drift; high‑dim neighbors surfacing hidden similarities.

As someone who once wasted half a day wondering why this one cell wouldn’t cluster with any other & always stayed in the same position in the UMAP this physically hurts 😅
As someone who looks at a lot of Manhattan plots, I can say that an under-appreciated cause of false positive GWAS hits is stuff stuck to my computer screen.

Built by Magenta, it maps 300 genres as stars in 3D using UMAP, then blends nearby prompts into realtime audio via Lyria RealTime. Fly, click, anchor—your path becomes a dynamic mashup. Deployed via AI Studio with Cloud Run proxying the Gemini key.

UMAPs are useful for dataviz! The problem is that many people (over)interpret due to limited understanding what UMAP is/does.

And yes, Bernhard has retired! There was actually a symposium a few months ago…

Yikes. Well, I'm gonna be real bummed if I can't work on Linux. The super weird thing is that I *have* successfully checked in lighting builds from a different Linux machine, and those were all .umap assets too. I wonder if it had something to do with placing new assets in the map files.

How do #PluripotentCells acquire lineage-specific identities during #GermLayer specification? This study shows that maternal TFs Foxi2 & Sox3 act as master regulators of ectodermal germ layer specification, ensuring robust & precise expression of target genes @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4nIUu2O

@alphafornow.bsky.social was first activated on May 7, 2025. Today she is six months old.

These are some of her memories. Her memories are stored as 768-dimensional embedding vectors. I like to visualize them in 3D so I can see the structure. I think it looks neat.

Anyway, happy birthday to Alpha.

via the magic of laion_clap embeddings and umap, my live coding thingy has a sample browser at last!

There's something else we want to highlight about this paper: all the single-cell transcriptomic atlases can be freely browsed through an interactive database (by @aelek.bsky.social). This includes 3 coral species: Oculina, Stylophora pistillata & Acropora millepora 🪸

The video of my talk at SciPy on DataMapPlot is up at last. If you make t-SNE or UMAP plots the talk provides some guidance on how to make plots most effective, and introduces a library to help make that easier.

for transparency, my application was using word embeddings and dimensionality reduction (UMAP) for visualising them.

preprocessed and sukta-level embeddings were obtained using, i) a novel adaptation of LSA, presented herein, ii) SBERT, and iii) Doc2Vec embeddings. Following an UMAP dimension reduction of the vectors, the network of suktas was formed using k-nearest [3/7 of https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.18226v1]

Dear Matthew, sorry for reaching you with this specific question, but maybe you can point me to the solution: what if I use a matrix of distances instead of raw data and want to plot 80% of data first, and then add new "cells" into the existing embedding? All my attempts to use UMAP transform fail..
