Avenger had only recently been on a convoy to Russia, and was presumably camouflaged for that. It was then almost immediately despatched to North Africa for Torch and got whacked on its way home. A camouflaged deck doesn't hide you from uboats, sadly.

In fairness, this was in reply to a post about the Great War but fuck me airpower was not a big feature of the war at sea there either. And whilst uboats intermittently caused Britain problems (and possibly bounced the USA into war) they didn't solve the German problem of the North Sea being sealed.

In fairness, the Royal Navy in WW2 got really, really pissed off with everybody trying to ram uboats and told them to knock it off because it was a net drain on resources. The cruise liners are probably more useful ferrying troops. By then it's possible battleships are the same.

But not in WW1.

Yep. I'm trying to think of a movie with Nazis and no totenkopfs. Maybe one focused on North Africa or uboats would be the most likely, but in film they're more ubiquitous than they were in irl.

We learned in world history in 6th grade that the usa rejected jewish germans and jewish austrians and jewish checholslovakians from taking safe haven in the usa from nazis. Many were killed by german Uboats because the usa did not allow them in. Cruel.

My grandfather had a highly distinguished career. He located UBoats in the Mediterranean during WWII. He was was part of the small group General MacArthur assembled for designing Japan’s post-war government. He flew blimps and all sorts of planes. He ran Cold War wargames after that.

My grandfather has a brilliant man who had a career in the Navy, including WWII in a blimp searching for German Uboats in the Mediterranean Sea. Years after he died, people raved about how professional he was. He only got to live for 62, dementia impacting the last two years. It's so unfair.

I think (not my area of expertise either, fwiw) the fear of the Uboats was more pressure than their actual capabilities.

We entered WWI in large part because of a German U-boat that killed Americans.

So when they were found in the Atlantic - we got ... nervous.

number of standardized armaments. Yet German rationalization in some areas was achieved at the cost of quality. The Melo9 fighter plane, for example, was too slow to cope with its more manoeuvrable Soviet counterparts. The Junkers bombers were also too slow, and too small to carry a really devastating payload. The new Tiger and Panther tanks were superior products, but, as so often, they were rushed into battle before all the design problems had been ironed out. They had a worrying tendency to break down. And all too often thev ran out of fuel and could not be resupplied.2 At the same time, the Soviet people paid dearly for their a fraction of the total. Losses, breakdowns and lengthy periods in port for repairs meant that there were only twenty-five U-boats operating in the Altantic by the summer of 1940. This was nowhere near sufficient to cut off Britain's transatlantic supply lines. '1 As well as being few in number, German submarines were also not much more technically advanced than they had been in the First World War. They still had to sail mostly on the surface, where they moved slowly and could easily be spotted by enemy planes; diving was only possible for relatively short periods of time. They were also disadvantaged by their lack of air reconnaissance support, so that they had to find the ships themselves. The British set up a convoy system almost immediately, providing destroyer protection for vulnerable merchant ships. Scanning the horizon anxiously for the tell-tale columns of smoke from British ships rising faintly over the horizon, German submariners had to take visual aim before releasing thei from December 1942 and route their convoys away from the waiting U- boats.116 The submarines were forced to search for Allied convoys mainly by sailing in loosely knit groups ('wolf-packs') which converged when one of them spotted the enemy. Shore-to-ship radio traffic with the convoys was also intercepted by the German navy from 1941 until June 1943, when a new code was introduced, thus helping the submarines find the convoys or at least work out where they were heading. But the radio signals used by the wolf-pack U-boats to communicate with one another were intercepted by the convoy escort ships. The submarines could not send and receive radio signals while submerged, and when under water they could only move very slowly, so they spent most of their time on the surface, making them vulnerable to location and attack. Under water, they could be located by echo-sounding and damaged by depth-charges. Submarines generally attacked from the surface and at night, so the convoy escorts devel High hopes were entertained for a new generation of submarines, equipped with powerful batteries that would enable them to remain submerged for long periods so that they could not be detected by radar. The new craft were built for speed so that they could overtake convoys and sink them before the accompanying destroyers could steam into action. The first of the new U-boats was delivered in June 1944, and over 150 had been built by February 1945. But they had been rushed into production before being properly tried and tested, and many of them succumbed almost immediately to teething troubles. In any case, without aerial reconnaissance they would have found it difficult to locate their targets. A crash programme of construction of a long-range reconnaissance aircraft, the Juzgo, had to be called off in the summer of 1944 after the damage inflicted by Allied air raids on production centres had made the futility of the project clear. Jutland was damaging to the mythos, and by WW2 they lost their flagship to the Bismarck, plus Force Z to the Japanese. Hell they were reliant on Lend Lease to protect their conveys once the Uboats really heated up. Naval decay really set in, and it's the lifeblood of Empire.
