I found all 4 pair of my heavier winter cycling gloves last night, and for this morning's C&O Towpath ride I wore the older Specialized semi-lobster ones with old-school Gore Windstopper. They were toasty!

Lest we forget.

“Still talking, she set off down the towpath, and pretty soon was swallowed by the shadows.”

At Tamworth Road Narrows our volunteers have been hard at work - digging out at the curve and laying another concrete base (ready to extend the wall), bricklaying the towpath wall and clearing the canal channel of vegetation.

Well done team!

On this day in 2017, I was at a conference in Manchester and as I had time, walked there from Piccadilly along the Rochdale Canal. (I found myself passing the site of the legendary Haçienda, now gone.) All utterly transformed since I mooched around there in a trench-coat in the early 1980s.

Walking alone along the leaf-thickened towpath he remembered the time he'd told her all he felt, releasing years of feelings shut up by the days and their leering allure. Told and told.

He said the words now, walking the leaf-thickened towpath. Because he'd not said them before.

Here’s a photo of Dilly ruling the towpath beside our narrowboat. She would walk on the lead from one lock to the next

I’m not sure about tunnels, and towpath continuity, but I think it’s possible.

That totally captures the atmosphere of walking a canal towpath in mid-autumn.

Golden leaves that sheltered me during the summer heat now rest upon the same still waters that carry me.
Hawthorn leaves stream upon slow wind eddies that I am unable to feel.
A squirrel looks down at Maggie.
My boots slide on mud.
Towpath tales.

I'll start by saying I'm a runner myself, but when you're running in a group - say a towpath - actually you're a bunch of rude and inconsiderate dicks if run at people and don't give others space. I'm OK I'll call you a c*nt but the elderly lady walking her dog didn't need that at 730 in the morning

c.1774-vintage original and now truncated line of the Oxford Canal disappears under an iron bridge built c.1834, when the canal here was straightened to better compete with the Grand Union for Midlands–London traffic.

I love seeing our great cormorants arrive on the canal (my daily commute is along the towpath), wintering away from the Atlantic coast.

The anglers hate them, but I'm totally on Team Cormorant. Have all the carp you want, lads.

Joggers, vloggers and doggers along the towpath today. And what a lovely day it was for it.
