For some weird reason the Toponomy section in the Weston-super-Mare wiki page is written in the first person voice of a stuffy old British schoolmaster. It’s rather charming, but it also takes 3 very long paragraphs to get to the 1300s en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weston-...

Montréal will have soon removed the last pieces of the name "Amherst" on its toponomy. The Square Amherst St will be renamed Pain-et-des-Roses Place.

🇵🇱🐐🌉 Every instance of guerrilla toponomy at Google Maps brings a smile to my face, such as somebody labelling the newest foot/bike bridges in Poznań as "Professor Lech Wałęsa Bridges". Wałęsa is not a professor, and these bridges aren't named after him, but it has been a few weeks already like this.

of most place names nowadays.

Thus, I think, Chaker’s observation of a lack of substrate toponomy can partly be explained by observation bias (only looking at the names that are understood) and partly by historical erasure of such names at a relatively late period.

Sorry your link is broken, I couldn't check what it says. So you are saying that there was a toponomy around 1500 AD that refers to the continental land west of Europe and Africa and West to Asia that was called America, but now "American" refers only to a subdivision of it. That is brave

Your president is a Russian asset surrounded by nazis but all you have to complain about is the price of eggs and toponomy?

The rating aren't for whether people liked the name. It is the number of points the name got when the criteria that were chosen as important were applied to the suggested names. A committee of toponomy, geography and history experts applied them. Here are the criteria:

Is this not one of the most kick-ass scientific visualizations you've ever seen? It's a periodic table, and the first thing to note is it's a left step periodic table. But most strikingly, electronegativity is shown as a contour map, with toponomy inspired by physical maps. Brilliant.

One striking difference between the toponomy of 🇨🇦 vs 🇺🇲 is the almost total absence of Biblical and Classical placenames in 🇨🇦.

Upstate NY is full of Greece+Rome from Syracuse to Pompey, but we've also got Romulus+Delphi, MI, Carthage, MO/MS, Antioch, CA, Athens, GA, etc.

ANY at all in Canada? 🤔

Toponomy matters "Google said the changes - for both Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali - will be made "quickly" [for US customers] once the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated" www.bbc.com/news/article...
Is Google Maps changing Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America?
It is the firm's "longstanding practice" to observe updates from official sources - in this case requested by Donald Trump.

72) MOUNT PLEASANT (M)

Mount Pleasant station at the junction of Kingsway, Broadway, and Main that is kind of the core of Mount Pleasant is unarguably well named with a widely used and accurate piece of toponomy

A+
