Fifty Years Ago, the US Staged a Coup in Australia
The 1975 “dismissal” of Australian Labor PM Gough Whitlam is often seen as a constitutional crisis initiated by an old British-led establishment. In reality, it was a bloodless analog of other US-orch...

This is the Savva interview we saw at #thedismissal gig on Tuesday at MoAD. Serious in parts, but also eye-popping and hilarious. He's getting old, but it's still vintage PJK. ❤️

One of yesterday's best panel discussions at #thedismissal was with Kerr's Aide De Camp and the 3 men who were there to be 'interviewed' for his replacement. Hilarious, with all the comings and goings and drama at Government House that lunchtime. Anyhoo, I noticed 2 of the current Aides De Camp […]

This House & Garden cover is from October 1975—just a month before Whitlam’s dismissal. Bright colours, optimism, and the suburban dream… while Australian politics was about to flip upside down.

ASIS worked very closely with Britain’s MI6 at this time, to the extent of being a virtual branch of the British service. The two services shared offices in Asia and sometimes represented each other in stations in the region. #theDismissal #Whitlam #Kerr #auspol
‘Spooky fiddling’: Preparing the ground – Part 3
There is profoundly increasing evidence that foreign espionage and intelligence activities are being practised in Australia on a wide scale… I believe the evidence is so grave and so alarming in its implications that it demands the fullest explanation. The deception over the CIA and the activities of foreign installations on our soil… are an onslaught on Australia's sovereignty. – Gough Whitlam, House of Representatives, 1977

A little the worse for wear after a very big day yesterday at #thedismissal. Couldn't sleep, a bit overwhelmed with the yugeness of the event, all the famous faces.... and the FIFTY years (really?? I still feel 20 in my head). Off to landcare on this beautiful morning then maybe home for a nap.

The cloud of American involvement in the events of November 1975 is unlikely to ever clear. Especially while US presidential libraries continue to block access to critical documents that might shed further light on the shenanigans going on. #auspol #Whitlam #theDismissal

Albo notes that passionate interest in #TheDismissal "points to the stature and significance of the government and the prime minister it brought down."

If only he saw that "stature and significance" as a role model for himself. #auspol

#thedismissal was my 1st political memory. I was tiny. But it was seismic & everyone in Australia talked about it for years.

Travelling in Asia, Europe & North America I realised Oz is pretty unimportant cause even the most well-educated folks I met had no idea the UK queen had sacked an Oz PM.

🚨 50 yrs after the dismissal of Gough Whitlam: when he very publicly called the pro-Israel lobby’s influence “blackmail” in 1973. Today Gaza shows the same pattern.

This 🧵

"No Labor govt since [ #TheDismissal] has dared to have a suite of policies as progressive"

The do-nothing Albanese govt presides over an increasingly REgressive status quo.

Poverty, housing stress, poorer health and educational outcomes for many. Greater wealth & privilege for the few.
One of the most damaging and enduring aspects of the Dismissal, fifty years ago today, was its poisoning of the electorate against the Whitlam government, ensuring that it would lose the subsequent election and creating fear of progressive government.

I don't listen to many podcasts but I did listen to a fabulous one on the ABC Listen app awhile ago about this. It pretty much said exactly that. And there's a reason why the archives won't release the rest of the documentation. How bad must it be? #TheDismissal

Heard on RN that on Dismissal day, at no point did the angry crowd who’d gathered at Parliament House turn violent - except that just as Fraser was leaving to see the GG, somebody reached in and poured a can of beer through his car window. Not sure it gets more Aussie than that. ❤️ #TheDismissal

This deep pink rose is stunning in real life and is the size of my palm. The scent is lovely, although I appreciate not everyone enjoys a fragrant flower. ❤️ 😍

Yes, I was back at Old Parliament House in Canberra. So shot this picture while I was there.
