I worked my way up in a commercial casting studio to become a casting director: 14 years.
During lockdown the majority of production companies I worked with closed
Zoom auditions took casting studio jobs away
Took classes to be a pharmacy tech.

How has your field or profession changed over time? If you’re just starting out, how do you think it will change in the future?

(I'm a little behind ... )
I miss After Dark, the screen saver for Macs.
I had the basic version, the Looney Tunes version, and the Star Trek version. We installed them all at work - you'd walk by a desk and hear Spock's voice: Paaaaaaiiiiiiiiiin! 🤣

What piece of "old-school" technology do you miss (or still use)?
My feet and/or a bicycle. I'd use public transit (bus/tram/metro/zeppelin/spaceship/submarine/funicular/teleportation) much more often if North Americans would understand how to implement that properly.

How has your definition of success changed over time?
I lived in NL for 35 years, then 20 in the US. How the Dutch and Americans see success is different. I'm Dutch and I won't change that: "community and purpose, instead of achievement/wealth"

What's a historical or cultural moment you remember vividly?
On TV: I saw the first space shuttle flight, opening of the Berlin Wall, and 9/11 live.
In person: I was right there, close up, to witness the rise of the Dutch far right and the murder of Pim Fortuyn in 2001/2002.

What's a historical or cultural moment you remember vividly?
JFK's funeral - I was at a neighbor's house playing with friends; their mom had the TV on. She had us sit on the couch with her and watch the procession. I was sad the kids had lost their dad.

What was your go-to way to have fun as a teen or young adult?
Age 14-18 wasn't horrible but a bit boring. Age 18+ was cool. First I was in architecture school. We made all sorts of art and organized concerts, festivals, events and parties. Most fun was designing posters/flyers.

What's one trend or fashion style you rocked that hasn't aged well?
In the mid 80's someone brainwashed me and convinced me to buy a pair of green/blue plaid golf pants. Another person got me to buy white shoes. The evil magic spell only lasted a few days and I survived intact.

What advice would you give your younger self starting out in the workforce?
1. Don't put up with bullshit
2. Do things you love, you'll fail a lot, but you'll get better at it
3. Keep trying to make the world a little nicer, that's not the easy way but the only way that matters

Oh, boy ...
Stand up for yourself.
Don't let your manager or anyone else gaslight you.
And document, document, document.

What was your favorite way to listen to music growing up?
❌ When I was 8 I started taping things from the radio, but they always cut off songs at the end, which sucks
❌ when I was 10 or 11 a friend and I starting buying 7 inches
✅ soon after we regularly shoplifted them instead

How did you communicate with friends or family before cell phones?
I could say something about landlines, but that's boring.
a) We would often just walk over, see if anyone's home, and hang out
b) Send letters (up to 20 pages long) and/or mixtapes (up to 90 minutes)

If you suddenly didn’t have your phone now, how would you communicate?
If cell phones stopped existing I'd throw a party and invite the people who I wouldn't need to phone. Cell phones are the worst invention ever (besides all things Elon Musk didn't even invent himself).

I was maybe 6 or 7 when my cousin, 5 years older than me, gave me his pocket transistor radio with a leather case and strap. I carried that thing everywhere.

In school, we wrote notes - sometimes in backward cursive - and passed them between or even during classes. After writing the notes, we'd fold them up into little footballs for easier and less detectable exchange.
