#technologists
I’m listening to a book about Facebook’s history, power and influence - Careless People. I get the feeling that we’re so sucked into social media as a global society, that we’re doomed to be controlled by technologists and oligarchs. This is not good.

if you ignore this subtlety, exploiting it to publish "revelations" and "scoops" that amount to "Look: technologists treat our art as data! It must be because they want to DESTROY ART for BIG TECH!" That's the modus operandi of too many journalists right now.
November 12, 2025 at 5:35 PM
There's a long-running communication breakdown between technologists on the one hand and commercial publishers and creators on the other. Technologists and digital researchers often see creative works as data, while publishers and creators see them as commercial art.

lol… technologists always out themselves. DNA, not that darn DNS again. 😆

This is one of the reasons why I want more civic technologists to consider @runforsomething.net or at least being a tech advisor. This stuff isn’t obvious unless you know.
For years I've reported on the tech and tools that bounty hunters have access to. I think people would be shocked it is often essentially what cops can have too, w/ less accountability

DC is probably the easiest place in the world to rapidly start a real newspaper. You have a bunch of talented reporters who’d jump at the chance nearby and a city full of experienced technologists who’d help you rapidly spin it up. You could probably make it revenue positive in like 3-5 years.
Once again, humbly asking MacKenzie Scott to re-start the Washington Star (DC's one-time evening newspaper), hire away the Capital Weather Gang and the polling team from the Post, and then take my money

Similar widespread ignorance of #history of #technology among technologists, even of one's own field, infuriated me when I was doing engineer things in product development in the late 00's.

I saw it lead to 1) avoidable mistakes and 2) pernicious beliefs of superiority. 1/

seems like in design, too, there’s no grounding any more, or sense of what came before and why — everything’s superficial, take it as it comes, even at, say, apple

apple who’s trying to retread “transparent material” for the THIRD TIME and failing at basic UI conventions and losing functionality

I keep beating this drum: the kind of people one thinks of as Silicon Valley "techbro" are so often finance people with an engineering cosplay habit, not actual technologists

Elon Musk was famously *never* a good coder and I can't believe he ever scienced a rocket either. But he craves that respect
the worst part is that for the people at the top "good at math"/sciencey is essentially a vibe one socially codes their way into by being minimally competent at informally discussing things actual math/science people do, unless (e.g.) Elon Musk has proven a theorem I didn't hear about.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Many modern technologists and computer scientists are very cogent systems thinker because any sufficiently advanced technology *is people*, all technical systems are socio-technical. The capital T Tech dipshits talking about “alpha” are mainly cosplaying finance people, regardless of their training
This is absolutely the case. Tech Guys of previous generations, to the extent that that category can be read back into the 19th and 20th centuries, were shockingly well-read by modern standards
it’s also notable how the techbros of today really don’t read *books* anymore - this was really not the case for the Tech Guys of earlier generations, far as I’ve been able to tell

Anyway, one alternative is to build better ways of doing things, and to really empower folks working in tech to feel confident about making alternatives. I hope the Society for Hopeful Technologists can be a part of that. Still a handful of places last at our 3rd open house event luma.com/isqs8n9x

And yes, the technologist also gets paid more, CT technologists make on the order of $100,000 per year, which is around double that of Germany. However, the real cost is that the radiologist is looking at the scan.

[2 of 4] During the panel, a professor in the audience asked an important question on behalf of the students there: In the current tech industry environment, what are the prospects for young technologists about to enter the market?

Sometimes I get the feeling “fun” is a sanitized word technologists use when they mean “addictive.”
