I did this rose in 2017 on a guy with a great collection. He had gotten a small tattoo and was like, "is that it? I need more." Yosemite Sam was done at Capitol Tattoo in Silver Spring, MD circa the late 90s/2000s

IMO, most of the issues point to poor/careless editing by PNAS, a lack of reference checks, and either ignorance or omission of evidence contrary to their hypothesis by the authors. The article shouldn't have made it past review based on these problems.

The novel technique, Laser-Stimulated Fluorescence (LSF), used in paleontology, is 🔥 and hopefully more ancient human remains (both tattooed and suspected of being tattooed) will be examined with LSF. But the article fails in the interpretation and contextualisation of the images.

PNAS methodology seems haphazard given the central claim of tattoo precision: "Mummies...were examined using a handheld UV flashlight...Some mummies were encased and inaccessible for scale bar placement, so in these specimens, the scale was estimated using focus and distance.”

PNAS article claims Chancay tattoos were hand-poked with a single point, but does not cite Aaron Deter-Wolf et al, 2024, which suggests incision tattooing for same culture based on far more robust and comparative base of evidence.
