The paths were wet from spring rains when I took these pictures. Rue Anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides) is named for its dual resemblance to meadow-rues and anemones (the plants in the buttercup family, not the squishy sea invertebrates).

Bloodroot has larger flowers than most of the other spring ephemerals. The number of petals on each flower ranges from 7-12, and the shape of the petals can vary. Each plant has one flower and one leaf.

Dutchman's breeches, my favorite wildflower! White flowers shaped like upside-down pairs of baby pants arranged in rows along light brown pedicels. Feathery, mimosa-like blue-green leaves. Yellow trout lily. Bright yellow trumpet shaped flower growing above a rosette of brownish green, lance-shaped leaves dappled with irregular, blurry, pale green spots. Waterleaf. Geranium-like (palmate, deeply cut) green-blue leaves with a symmetrical pattern of pale spots concentrated at the leaves' inner corners. Blue cohosh! My first time seeing it in nature. A cluster of six-petaled maroon flowers with yellow and green centers above vaguely peony-like leaves that have a dark bluish cast when they've newly emerged.
