One of ten Conistra gallica that I trapped on the night! - moth-trapping on the high ridge at the Sierra Nevada, Granada, Andalucia, Spain, on the 11th of November 2025. The only Conistra staudingeri of the night - moth-trapping on the high ridge at the Sierra Nevada, Granada, Andalucia, Spain, on the 11th of November 2025. And here are the peaks zoomed in Mulhacen (left - 3,479 metres/ 11,414 feet) and Veleta (right - 3,398 metres/ 11,148 feet). There is a dusting of snow across the tops and because Mulhacen is further away it appears lower. Ancylosis convexella - A scarce migrant/vagrant for me - in the past 13 years I have seen 13 (but 10 of these were last autumn 2024 and only 1 more in autumn 2025 - this one!) & it looks to have had an adventurous life with both antennae damaged! - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 29th of October 2025. The amazing looking scarce migrant that is Antigastra catalaunalis - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 28th of October 2025. And this is what arrived in my traps on this night - I trapped 2 of these Phtheochroa ochralana tortrix moths - a species new to Iberia (as far as I know)! and mostly found along the North African coast and further east. I didn't recognise the moths, though similar to Phtheochroa ochrobasana in external appearance. But Peter Huemer and Jonathan Agius who both have previous experience of the species did recognise them. I have since dissected them as 2 males to confirm the ID as this rare vagrant species and in due course they will form part of a scientific note on finding them. More details will of course be in that paper. So, what weather made these special vagrants arrive? - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 28th of October 2025. Another weather map for you from the excellent Ventusky - https://www.ventusky.com/. CIMA and Tarifa are at the southern most point of the Spanish coast on the map, roughly half way between Algeciras and Tangier. The weather map is from 23.00 on the night of 28th October 2025. And gentle ESE winds can be seen to be coming all the way from near Nador on the Moroccan/Algerian Mediterranean coast. (But what makes this weather special for migrant moths compared with many other nights when there are Easterly/Levante winds - we still need to work this out?) - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 28th of October 2025.
