A New Zealand snail named Ned has a rare left-coiled shell - only 1 in 40,000 snails are like him. But it means he can’t mate with normal snails, leaving him loveless unless another “lefty” is found.

If you want additional snailfacts, snailscience, or snailevangelism, happy to supply. I study fossil and living marine snail evolution/ecology, and how they respond to changing environments, including climate change. Turritellids, the most abundant post-K-Pg macrofossil are my main critter.

Sharks might rule the ocean, but—believe it or not—some snails are out here being just as lethal in the forest. Yep, certain snails, like the one in this GIF, are carnivores, snacking on earthworms, bugs, and even other snails. Who knew, right?

Happy national snail 🐌 day! Most of my favorite snailfacts are already a part of the snails in short series I did with @franzanth.bsky.social, so I’ll repost them here.

If anyone has any marine snail (extant or paleo) questions I’ll do my best to try to answer them too🦑🐌⚒️🧪
