So I made a blog to accompany the Rhenish church thread. I'll post occasionally. The first post is about coal, Catholicism, and St. Katharina in Oberhausen. I'd love it if you joined for free:

Oberhausen lies along two of the region's key rivers, the Ruhr and the Emscher. It grew into a city in the late 19th century, and was incorporated in 1862. After coal production outpaced demand in the "coal crisis" of 1957, mining has decreased, but continued to exist. This activity damaged St. Katharina's predecessor structures; St. Katharina is located directly next to a slag heap. In 1979, about a decade after the main wave of Rhenish church construction had ended, the local architecture studio Funke and Craemer (today Funke Popal Storm), founded in 1945, began construction of a new St. Katharina, which was consecrated in 1982. The church falls in to the "tent" category of what Kerstin Wittmann-Englert identifies as one of the three key topoi of postwar West German churches: tent, ship, and dwelling (for more on what tent structures do and don't represent, see my article here). The use of concrete and brick, with a copper roof that goes far down the exterior, is also reminiscent of Gottfried Böhm's work; Böhm, in an earlier mode, designed Our Dear Lady in Oberhausen, which is now part of the same parish. The church website calls the design "extravagant," and I think they're right. But a bit of extravagance might not be amiss in a mining town.

Wat een jaar was 2025:
- overwerkt, opgekrabbeld en inmiddels weer aan de slag;
- maanden last van sleutelbeenbreuk en (alsnog) operatie;
- relatie na ruim 30 jaar vastgelopen en beëindigd.
Veel geleerd, pijn en verdriet gehad, lastige keuzes gemaakt, gegroeid.
Hoop dat 2026 een beter jaar wordt...
