(It is funny, though, that Julie Kelly — probably mostly through jealousy — actually applied appropriate skepticism to a wild conspiracy theory, given how many she herself has initiated.)

Time after time, Homeland Security’s accounts of its violent incidents in Chicago turn out to be lies. Local journalists and a federal judge have done a good job of calling them out. I wish the national political media had the same level of skepticism toward “official” accounts by proven liars.

Judge Sara Ellis said Trump's Justice Department lacks credibility, partly because of a lie told by U.S. Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino.

Like, 15 years ago, “analytics” might have been a new strategy from an upstart team looking for an edge. The skepticism was understandable, if closed-minded and retrograde. Now basically every team in every pro league uses them! They’re the consensus!

Anyway, it’s a style of politics that many of the voters and neighbors here are exhausted with, and ultimately sabotages progressives, by encouraging groupthink and discouraging reasonable, healthy criticism and skepticism.

The consequences of it this year? A Frey third term.

I think essentially everyone but one person who urged me to have faith that Biden would eventually do a course correction, whether after the WCK assassinations, or the May 31st ceasefire proposal, or the election, has conceded to me that my skepticism was correct. Wonder what they think today.

At events I always insist that I enjoy the daily act of writing, and I'm often met with skepticism. But an activity can be frustrating/challenging and still bring joy. In fact, that's part of it-- like playing a video game on a too-easy difficulty setting, a frictionless existence is not rewarding.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

There’s a growing cottage industry of journalists and influencers whose job it is to sell you “don’t panic, panicking is just what people want you to do. It isn’t that bad yet.” And frankly we should have as much or more skepticism towards them than the panic people. They’re selling complacency.

Her skepticism didn’t seem to bother the shopkeeper one bit. Clearly, this wasn’t her first encounter with a doubtful patron.
