They are mating so joined at the back, facing away from each other. They are sort of oval shaped, brown with some white spots, more going towards the front. They have a metallic deep red patch in the middle.

Great-looking beast — Phasia hemiptera, a parasitoid of shieldbugs. Near Buxted, in the Sussex Weald, d Ed here I used to see it regularly when I lived in Sussex.

In Waltham Abbey today I found 11 adult and three nymphs of Striped Shieldbug (Graphosoma italicum) at Ninefields and a further 10 adults and a single nymph at Abbey Gardens. I haven't seen any at Fishers Green on my last two recent visits. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

No Moths to speak of tonight, but 3 Mottled Shieldbugs (Rhaphigaster nebulosa) were of interest.

Clearly spreading their range - iNat has no records for Suffolk and NBN just a one.

For longer than I remember, we’ve been searching gorse and its relatives without any luck for Gorse Shieldbugs. How odd it was to spot our first one today on an old grass stem at Dersingham Bog with no obvious Gorse in sight.

A careful search of Town Mead, Waltham Abbey produced three nymphs and 12 adult Striped Shieldbugs (Graphosoma italicum) in a large stand of Hemlock today. The best count of the year on this site, the warm sunshine encouraging them out to bask. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

Found four Striped Shieldbugs (Graphosoma italicum) in an area with scattered Hogweed on Roundhills estate, Waltham Abbey today. The first time I have checked this small sub population this year, still in the same area as 2024. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

My shieldbug highlights from the garden this year - Juniper Shieldbug, which we've had for a few years, but this year I've seen quite a few of them, and Blue Shieldbug, which I've never seen in the garden until this year. Very exciting! 😄
