My point is, there's a lot of Swiss cheese out there that'll be a hell of a lot easier for Quant to break than SHA256, i highly doubt that's where bad actors are going to start. If Q becomes a problem, we will have warning. There's already a BIP (360) in the works to harden Bitcoin.

maybe? Grovers algo is only halfing the n-bit security of symmetric/hashing algorithms.

Sha256 drops to a 128 bit security level. still within what you can call secure. Especially as grovers algo might not even provide a practical speedup when practical QC's capable of executing it are made.

Wallets don't show ecdsa keys, but instead a sha256 of the keys, so quantum crackability of unspent wallets is not an issue so long as sha256 is not quantum cracked, and that would take a ridiculous number of qbits. Nonetheless, an unfounded fear is probably real though.

The tweet is suggesting someone might break ecdsa, not sha256.
Sha256 isn't used to sign transactions*.

*: might be technically possible, would be pretty silly.

(I think in cases where you're really paranoid about this happening you just use a pair of hashes, like sha256+md5)

if two people independently want to store it, they just both independntly put it in /data/${sha256(the bee movie script)}, which is exactly the same, and so they need not coordinate with each other provided they can be sure their writes don't interleave or such

(S3, POSIX rename satisfy this)

so let's say you want to store the bee movie script, and you're certain that whenever you retrieve it, you will know exactly what it is you want to retrieve down to the byte

you put it in /data/${sha256(the bee movie script)}. now you only need to store the sha256, which is smaller but as useful

less known way to calculate sha256 of files on Windows

disksnapshot -c -k -v c:\test

will print out file info including sha256 for every file in the directory
