But at the higher level, in professional jobs, you can avoid certain things by playing your 'no Korean' card. Your 'foreigner' card. Universities have service work, but if you don't know Korean, you can only participate in service work to a certain extent. #ServiceWork

But me?

It is the people I most hoe.
They are thirsty.
And need some drink.

I — half-full or half-empty,
depending on the day —

still poor, I think.

Accidentally took a 30+ mile, 45 min delivery, w/ shit instructions to a fancy area last night.

$4 tip.

Rich people are a fucking blight

Bright side, I learned how my job gets deliveries to bad tippers: They hide them in multi-stop trips. I’ll have to keep an eye out.

Compassion fatigue is real in service work. When serving our unhoused neighbors becomes overwhelming, self-compassion isn't selfish—it's essential. How do you practice grace with yourself?

New clip: Steve Ahlberg was dying of liver cancer and convinced me to start a nonprofit.
Steve's infectious commitment to making things better—even facing death—gave me my first taste of sustained service.
What would you do with Steve's clarity?

"We don't go to the margins to change things. We go to the margins and we get changed." - Fr. Greg Boyle

I thought I was helping people experiencing homelessness. Instead, they changed me. We're not saviors - we're students.

This wisdom hit me hard. The strongest families I know aren't bound by blood - they're bound by choice, love, and mutual support.

The anger is real. The systems failing our neighbors deserve our rage.

But anger can't sustain this work. Love must be our fuel.

Reverting back to my 2008 self of " i will do my best to be nice to customers" but, with the added zest of "these customers voted me into nazi Germany" is a um, "unique" experience

Yes, they are absolutely crucial, drive science through innovative method development. In my field, most of those positions aren't permanent, a.o. #WissZeitVG, #ichbinhanna #ScienceAsAService without a perspective in a nutshell.
A now prof told me, she never did #servicework for others. It's unfair
Your yearly reminder to acknowledge the core facilities you use and their staff scientists in your papers. These scientists are a crucial part of the scientific ecosystem and to continue to exist they need tangible credit for their work. Plus their associated expertise adds credibility to your work.

This is a great example of conservative doublethink.

They think servicework is beneath them and want a minority population to serve them because "that's where they belong", but if they see too many minorities serve them too often, they want white people in those jobs because "they're just better".
Missouri's AG Andrew Bailey is suing Starbucks, arguing that its workforce is too "female" and "non-white" and as a result Missouri consumers “pay higher prices and wait longer for goods and services" because its workforce is "less qualified"

This is a brazenly racist and sexist lawsuit.

he bragged about having the best job growth numbers for black people in his last term (which was the outcome of dei programs instituted in response to black lives matter protests) and now is working to get every black person who rises above servicework fired from their job.
Stop fucking saying he blamed “DEI,” which is some abstract, non-tangible idea. He is blaming people of color having jobs he thinks they aren’t qualified for. He’s blaming race. He’s being racist every time he says it. Journalists need to get fucking backbones, my word.
