Scientists have sequenced the oldest-ever RNA from a 39,000-year-old woolly mammoth named Yuka, whose remains were found frozen on a bluff in northeastern Siberia.

The research opens a new window on past life.

Cleaning up my office and found the pre-draft of my novel Absolution: Some scribbled-in notebooks and scene frags on the backs of hundreds of discontinued library catalogue cards, which I then sequenced in story order.

Exclusive: Adolf Hitler’s DNA has been sequenced by scientists

It has:
- shown he had a disorder which impacted his sexual development
- debunked rumours about his ancestry
- shown a high likelihood that he had a neurodivergent condition and/or bipolar disorder

There’s the Dance Your PhD competition… but what about Drink Your PhD?
After Swapna Subramanian’s defense we went to Longview Ciderhouse and drank Kanavu, the brand of cider on tap that was brewed with a wild yeast Swapna found, sequenced, and artificially selected for brewing honeycrisp apples. YUM

for everything I write, I make a playlist meant to "score" key scenes, represent certain characters, etc. (it's sequenced in narrative order, usually.) usually, I end up discovering and revisiting a lot of music during a book cycle - which is really fun.

I don’t think we’re talking loudly enough (so white supremacists can hear) that scientists who sequenced Hitler’s DNA 🧬 proved he had a “micro penis.”

midi synth is one of those skills where im like "when is THAT ever going to be useful in my life" but i remembered how around a decade ago i sequenced some dkc cartoon songs and yknow if i made a dkc greatest hits karaoke pack and put it on itch it might be the best way to give back to mankind

"We've sequenced Hitler's DNA and it turns out he was high maintenance" is also deeply unshocking news today

Lophophorata is monophyletic!

Super excited to see this work out in Current Biology - we sequenced a phoronid genome and used shared chromosome fusions to confirm the monophyly of Lophophorata.

A big team effort from the Luo Lab @yjluo.bsky.social!

Proud to share the preprint for some of my postdoctoral work in developing a high-throughput sequencing screen to find apomixis in plants. We sequenced 55 apple genotypes maintained by the USDA and over 1200 of their embryos. 🍎

Several of the mushrooms we found had no corresponding DNA sequence in the giant database they compared them to, but the scientists could not ID them as a new species because the DNA could correspond to a named mushroom that has not yet been sequenced. Frustrating!

During the event, I assisted in a civic science effort to collect, ID, and sequence fungi in the Olympic Peninsula. Over ~5 days, 66 people participated, made 1692 observations in iNaturalist, and IDed 379 species. Most of those were DNA sequenced. Our collections will be stored in the Burke Museum!

Forgive me if I'm really, really skeptical of anyone who claims to have sequenced Hitler's DNA and to have diagnosed him with an intersex condition and some sort of neurodivergence. In today's political climate? In anticipation of a TV documentary? Err. Yeah. Pass.

Any #archaea #archaeasky lab out there interested in having their Natrialba species sequenced on ONT r10 up to about 3Kx read depth for free? I'll send back annotated assembly, methylation data and raw signal files. I need at least one more species for a paper. Feel free to DM!

I'm frustrated with the gameplan ive been screaming into the wind for weeks that crossing patterns to Brown would fix things. Yet all we get is poorly sequenced runs.

But I fundamentally believe in this team when it actually matters. They've earned that much after winning the SB.
