I also wish to highly recommend Scrapnik Island. It is part of the IDW comics (so in continuity with the games) but it is a standalone story that does not require any prior knowledge about the comics for it. Scrapnik Island is really good!
Older art but thinking about Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island again and how much fun it was to color and design for.
If you haven't read it, it's a short 80 page horror story that doesn't require any prior sonic knowledge. If you like cool/hot/cute robots this one's for you.

Seconding this as a huge fan. Scrapnik Island is genuinely one of the best pieces of Sonic media, if you ask me. Absolutely worth a read.
