Angel Shark Day was created to highlight the plight of this group, which has suffered steep declines. Angel sharks risk extinction: over 50% of the 23 known species are in a threat category on the IUCN Red List.

Calves are born without the Atlantic spotted dolphins’ characteristic spots, which begin to emerge after their first year. As the dolphins mature, the spots deepen in colour and spread across the body, becoming more prominent with age.

The ocean sunfish will regularly bask on their sides near the ocean's surface. With no tail fin, this bony fish does appear as unusual, using its prominent dorsal and anal fins to swim and manoeuvre our oceans.
