#rubygems
After the Rubygems drama, I felt frustrated that I can’t escape evil people trying to dominate my life.

I found myself mourning the future I thought we would have; but also hopeful that it’s not too late to start choosing kindness.

Join me in building a better future:

O Rubygems sofreu uma "mudança de direção" forçada por intervenção de empresas influentes no ecossistema Ruby, porém isso ficou em segundo plano quando o criador do Ruby on Rails novamente se envolveu numa "polêmica" por suas opiniões políticas merdas.

You know… Ruby Central’s takeover of rubygems GitHub org ONLY worked because it could be executed within seconds, and by doing so, prevent the possibility of revert.

If the ownership change was a PR it would never have been approved.

If RC is “right”, why did they need the atomic switch?

What comes through loud and clear from Shan is the lack of respect for open source authors. She actually says it’s none of my business why I was removed from rubygems. I don’t know where you got the audacity but you should put it back. youtu.be/nKpo68g9dEk?...

Jamie Gaskins wrote a great piece explaining how shipit, the code the deploys rubygems.org works and why a fork would have been fine. The one thing I would add is that there is no Ruby Central institutional knowledge. There were and are only outside rubygems maintainers jgaskins.blog/ruby-central...

This page (rubygems.org/pages/suppor...) lists three Open Source Sponsors — Shopify, Gusto, and Sentry — and six sponsors under the RubyGems Supporter Plus tier. I suppose these sponsors pay more than $2,500 per year.
Anyway, I completely agree that this level of support is not enough.

If the Rails Foundation tried to take Rails from its maintainers, I would stand up for the maintainers, despite my political differences.

Rails is not owned by the Rails Foundation in the same way RubyGems projects were not owned by Ruby Central.

And neither are legitimately owned by Ruby Core.

I joined Errol Schmidt at @reinteractive.bsky.social to talk about the RubyGems takeover by Ruby Central.

This was recorded before the transfer of RubyGems to Ruby Core.

Ownership of the RubyGems and Bundler repositories has officially moved to the Ruby core team. Ruby Central will continue to collaborate closely on management, governance, and development while operating rubygems.org for the community.

So this was nothing to do with operator agreements. The original RubyGems maintainer team would have been the right group to decide upon and figure out this transition.

Good news for the Ruby ecosystem.

RubyGems now has the same governance as Ruby itself. Matz and Ruby Core as stewards.

If Ruby Core has authority over where gems (by default) install from, this alignment makes sense.

Viva la Ruby!
