That's a hard one, because there's a lot of one-off stuff in original art. But of something that had multiple copies, probably Rowrbrazzle #1 or my copies of Vootie. Not sure I have a holy grail — at this point it's filling in gaps. I'd love to eventually have a full run of Brazzle.

Even though it's a members-only subscription kind of thing, that's really neat that one of the earliest publications in the furry fandom is still chugging away!

I appreciate that Rowrbrazzle is looking for substance & for everyone to have a contributing voice.

see back in this era of the fandom, the real perverts used special buttons to identify one another

This weekend I helped someone sort through mountains of comics, furcon books, and other books. It's funny how most don't realize the huge impact that small press/indie press did for furries. I only really learned about it through Shanda, AP, Radio Comix, MU, Gallery, Rowrbrazzle etc.

aside, but allegedly, Pauli Kidd was convicted of CP possession in 2004, possibly over a drawing by Terrie Smith appearing in Rowrbrazzle of a five year old character from Fangs of Ka'ath

As someone whose work was IN Rowrbrazzle… I agree. Spot on, Dave.

old-school furry/funny animal stuff got me thinking about it. someone on fedi acquired this funny animal book from 1973! that's nuts to me! fursuits.online/@tilton/1139...

and that got me talking with a greymuzz mutual on there which led to me reading about rowrbrazzle artists

Attached: 3 images I got a comic in the mail today I've been looking for for a very long time. It's Jim Himes's "Animal Pikchurs", from 1973. Jim Himes was an underground comic artist with quite a fe...

My fursona isn't cartoonish, though I make some cel style art that's kind of that way. In my world, the creatures there are fox-like but could say not actually foxes, but they resemble them and vice versa. Furry is derived from Critters and Rowrbrazzle APA though, which had anthro and feral stories.

Cover Art for RowrBrazzle 161, April 2024. Featuring space alien superspy bunnygirl SnowBuni. Both RowrBrazzle and SnowBuni have been in print for 40 years now, since 1984.

New in the mail: Rowrbrazzle 159, with my own little contribution, a brief intro to satyr plays. I'm endlessly tickled that this bunch of cool artists and writers let me tag along in the oldest continuously running furry publication (turning 40 years old in a few months!)

I had a period of time where I had no Internet and keeping up with the goings on was very difficult. On the upside however, when I finally got back into social media, I had lots of fun furry stuff to catch up on haha. I'm certainly going to check out Rowrbrazzle though! 👍

Check it out!

Musical Cat Bits #3 by Tom Verre. This seems to have been included in a copy of Rowrbrazzle from 1991.

Today's "you never know what you'll find": I popped into one of my local comic shops (Outer Limits in Waltham) while waiting for a prescription to be filled and this 1989 holiday card from Tom Linehan (former Rowrbrazzle member) was in a box of zines. The owner (Steve, great guy) just gave it to me.

That's really cool! Over the last several months I've gotten really interested in vintage furry media, everything from Jerry, to Steve Martin, to just like people associated with Rowrbrazzle and the like

Paulie Kidd's novel, "Fangs of K'aath" was first published on the pages of Rowrbrazzle before seeing publication in book form in 2000.

Short answer: furries begin coalescing in the late 70s w/ underground/alt zines and sci fi/fantasy conventions. First generally accepted distinctly furry publication is Rowrbrazzle, which debuted Feb. 1984. Earliest instance in print of the word furry is July 5, 1985 in a LosCon daily update flier

Wait Rowrbrazzle still exists?! 25 years in the fandom and I find this out *now*? :)
October 23, 2023 at 2:58 PM
Good question! And yep, they do still exist, though they're fewer and further between. Rowrbrazzle is one that's still going strong and had its 40th anniversary in February. But you're right that these are kinds of analog social media and that function has mostly been made obsolete.
