#refraction
I took this photo of a refraction rainbow on our table in Victoria. It really was this vivid. This summer Houston whitewashed the rainbow crosswalks in our midtown but they can't block the sun.

The Hooded Merganser is a handsome diving duck with a taste for crustaceans, small fish, and aquatic insects, which they hunt entirely by sight. Their eyes are specially adapted to account for light refraction underwater, making them fearsome—but undeniably beautiful—hunters of crayfish.

I finally managed to make a decent vertical version of my plane refraction #sundial, with a tailor-made stand for the plexiglas cylinder. Hour is read on the north side, by the position of the shadow.
Had to sand the cylinder all around to avoid internal reflections (caustics).

I’m writing a serial fiction over on Substack. It’s called Dear Lila: Refraction Road. It’s a meditative journey through an imaginal world where I meet an…interesting group of companions. Once complete, it’s my dream to publish into a limited edition book 💚

Tonight’s lunar halo. A portent or just run of the mill refraction?

The starlight,
Having traveled
Billions of miles,
Seeks the gentle
Refraction
Of your eyes.
What heaven.
What absolution.

1st November. Local sheep conduct light refraction experiments. Reasons for this as yet unclear.
