In 2005, pitching a rhythm game with:

a plastic guitar

almost all cover songs

PS2-only

niche music that wasn’t Top 40

…should’ve been a death sentence.

But Harmonix and RedOctane went for it anyway.

RedOctane Games are actually currently working on one! As well as The Rhythm Company, a team founded by a bunch of trusted community members

- Fortnite Festival kinda sucks (sorry Harmonix, I still love you and don't think it's your fault)
- CRKD / RedOctane are actively developing a new retail game with members of the community
- Rock Band 4 was unfortunately delisted from digital marketplaces but the disc still plays fine on PS5.

🗓️ #OTD 8 nov. 2005 : sortie de Guitar Hero sur PS2 en Amérique du Nord. Développé par Harmonix, édité par RedOctane, c’est le tout premier épisode de la série et le début de la folie des guitares en plastique dans nos salons. 🎸

I did not say RedOctane, but thank you.
November 6, 2025 at 6:57 PM
If you mean @redoctane.games this was announced back on the 6th of August also the game RedOctane is working on cannot have the Guitar Hero or Rock Band names

Knowing that a company is gonna make a set of drums made presumably for Rock Band 4, Fortnite Festival and whatever RedOctane Games is cooking up has me almost wanting to dust off my old ION Drum Rocker for Xbox 360.

Just to get back into the groove of playing rhythm game drums again.
November 6, 2025 at 6:22 PM
the new redoctane game is probably gonna be full band oh my god we're back
November 6, 2025 at 5:22 PM
This totally means the RedOctane game is full band, right. 👀
November 6, 2025 at 5:10 PM
I’ve been a Guitar Hero fanboy ever since I was a kid and I desperately want the series to come back (tho I’m excited we’re getting a new rhythm game by RedOctane)

Serial entrepreneurs are betting that the next global tech giant could emerge from Taipei. But some entrepreneurs quietly wonder whether success might come faster overseas.

It's weird. We're seeing a small guitar game revival, with Fortnite Festival, the rise of Clone Hero and YARG, and that RedOctane game that's forthcoming

yet this rise could go away just as quickly as it did last time, when RB4 and Guitar Hero Live came out back in 2015.

I hope I'm wrong.

@p1podcast.com to add onto this. The original creator of YARG, and 4 other core devs were hired by RedOctane and they are the ones who will be creating the new rhythm game that is in development. YARG's open-source development was handed over to new people (who already had roles on the team).
@p1podcast.com with Rock Band 4 delisting and everything, I recommend you guys check out YARG on PC. Links to the Github and discord in the description. youtu.be/FWJzLud8q3M

Great work in this month's issue from cover to cover. Behind the scenes on First Light. A huge retrospective on Peter Molyneux. Undertale at ten years old. How Blendo makes games. The return of RedOctane. How Time Crisis 1 is also making a comeback. And a lot more.
Edge 416 is out now, featuring IO Interactive’s 007: First Light. For our 14-page cover story, we visit the studio to discover how its Hitman legacy paved the way, what it’s taking from the rich history of the iconic movie series, and the challenge of creating a new James Bond.

October 2, 2025 at 12:59 AM
Fortunately RedOctane are currently working on a new official game with many important community members and devs of beloved fan project YARG on the staff
October 1, 2025 at 7:50 PM
I hope whatever RedOctane is working on can recapture that feeling
October 1, 2025 at 6:50 PM
I hope the RedOctane game can actually come out and is great but it's owned by Embracer so I'm not confident at all
October 1, 2025 at 2:25 PM
at least we have whatever redoctane games is working on to look forward to

the silksong wait but for rock band fans
October 1, 2025 at 1:53 PM
YARG and Clone Hero are great alternatives. CRKD formed RedOctane Games and they're working on a new rhythm game too.
October 1, 2025 at 1:43 PM
Someone else brought this up in a discord server I'm in but it really is funny that the entire guitar hero community basically thinks they're the only rhythm game ever and is treating fortnite festival and redoctane as the revival of rhythm gaming when so many other good ones exist
a huge honor and proof that there is a huge audience for this genre, just have to really hone in on the packaging, visual design and aesthetics of it more than anything else
Somehow, UNBEATABLE is now the most wishlisted rhythm game in Steam's entire history. We've triple checked this. Also, what
