As reads get longer and more accurate I think something like this will be the path forward, so is is exciting to see! The problem also gets harder when it comes to detecting recombinants within the population....

Agreed: recombinants are long past due. The issue is the long regulatory process to convert LAL to an animal product-free process without compromising patient safety.

For SARS-CoV-2 (with 30,000 nucleotides) there are 4 to the 30,000 power number of possible sequence variants (more than the number of elementary particles in the Universe). So how can you predict which variant will lead to immune escape? Short answer: A.I.

Oh, god, please no. I hadn't seen this at all. Most of these recombinants are between extremely similar variants. The exception is XDV/NB.1.8.1, but that one's clearly on a slow, terminal decline. Frankenstein, ugh.
