Dryland public rangeland cattle ranching in the west is actually a tiny part of US beef production. I think about 2-3% of the total.

Most of it is feedlot type operations in places like Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Texas where there are no public rangelands.

In my most recent interview with Dean Cameron, ID’s insurance director, I was pretty dismissive at first of the idea that wildfire risk could be at play. “But remember,” he responded. “Lowland rangeland, BLM ground, is just as fire prone and just as dangerous as timber.”

The reports combine near real-time Rangeland Analysis Platform Production with gridMET precipitation data as PDFs/PNGs for use in reporting and decision processes.

Use in: ✅ Grazing planning & evaluation ✅ Drought assessment

Use the custom tool for any CONUS AOI or access pre-computed BLM reports.

📈 New from ClimateEngine.org: Vegetation Production Reports!

Developed with partners at the BLM and USDA-ARS, these reports bring satellite-based rangeland data directly into grazing and resource management workflows. Bridging the gap between data and decision-making. 🛰️🌾

At #AGU25, we talked with LDEO soil systems scientist Yushu Xia about her work modeling soil carbon dynamics and productivity of rangeland, which covers a large % of global surface associated with very high but uncertain carbon sequestration potential. ➡️ Lamont at AGU25: https://bit.ly/48VGXQ1

This isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s about the livelihoods of high-altitude rangeland communities and their cultural heritage.

Yak herders and cattle farmers are facing a growing crisis as weeds and invasive plants spread rapidly across rangelands. These aggressive invasive species don’t just crowd out native ones – they’re reshaping entire rangeland ecosystems.

The separation between forestry and rangeland science is silly and does ecology a disservice. Ecotones and alt stable states exist, and the fact that these folks (generally) don't talk to each other/knowledge share is wild.

The BLM lost 39% of rangeland staff since 2020. Without oversight, cattle overgraze, spread invasive plants, and pollute streams. Originally published by @propublica.org  and @highcountrynews.org
