They might of been pyrosomes. with the species in CA being called the “sea pickle”. They’re more tubular than the snail shell, which is slipper shaped. Both are enigmatic squishy blobs. Hard to distinguish if you’ve never seen either.

Start with "this is more of a comment than a question" & then go on for 10 minutes about giant pyrosomes without letting him get a word in edgewise
I just saw The Abyss on the big screen and now James Cameron is doing a Q&A what should I ask him? Wrong answers only

Correct for the sea squirty tunicates. I'm not sure if pyrosomes/salps ever have it

I'm a sucker for flying animals! Undergrad and masters I studied caiman and pyrosomes (both aquatic), so I think I just prefer things that shun the land

i just remembered, some diver saw a Giant Pyrosome in my local inlet a couple years ago!!!

we also had that utter plague of regular-size pyrosomes a few years back that clogged fishing nets and got nicknamed "penis fish" when they washed up on beaches looking like limp dildos

Strange animals called pyrosomes are thriving as the Pacific heats up
Sausage-shaped pyrosomes are blooming in great numbers during marine heatwaves, but their success comes at the cost of other animals, including fish

Believe it or not, these are some of our closest relatives in the marine invertebrate world. Pelagic tunicates like salps (top left), pyrosomes (bottom left) and doliolids (right) are all chordates like us. From this shared ancestry, they went one way and humans (as vertebrate animals) went another.

Observations off Timor-Leste suggest that coral reefs feeding on giant plankton like pyrosomes may enhance resilience to climate change by taking advantage of nutrient-rich ocean conditions. doi.org/g9prnr
Giant plankton could help coral fight climate change
A QUT researcher has observed a rare ocean phenomenon off the coast of Timor-Leste revealing a surprising ally in the fight for coral reef survival: giant, gelatinous plankton known as pyrosomes.

Poor Glenn cowrote a book with me and said he needed a random sea critter, so he made one up, remembered the rules for Belamuria, then lost an evening learning about pyrosomes.

Pyrosomes are colonies of tiny organisms working as one, glowing with shared light. Education is a communal act—teachers, students, and thinkers fueling a brighter world. They want to snuff that out, but like pyrosomes, we shine brighter together. #marinelife #invertebrate

Some years ago I made my deep dive into jelly fish proliferation and some group of authors also connected to the fishing industry argued against it - now I think its set and done - jelly fish are on the rise likely massively in a regional kind of bloom and bust cycle sign

Love pyrosomes thou :D
A global review of pyrosomes: Shedding light on the ocean's elusive gelatinous “fire‐bodies”
Pyrosomes are colonial tunicates that form gelatinous tubes and occasionally produce bioluminescent swarms. The rapid “bloom-bust” dynamics of pyrosomes have the potential to outcompete other zooplan...
