function visits, renames, types, comments, and every LLM interaction.

As an old fart in #xdev, I get asked often, mostly by young coworkers, how to get into binary exploitation in 2025. I looked around, and here’s my recommendation:

Back in July, ASU's ACE Institute launched the CTF Academy with the goal of bridging this gap through mentorship of top pwncollege learners by established CTF teams and players through CTF competitions (en route to the real world)! That July announcement: defcon.social/@Zardu...

Output Gap: pwn.college should prepare students to step directly into technical cybersecurity roles, but in practice, there's a gap between students honing skills on carefully-crafted educational challenges versus applying this knowledge in more chaotic environments.

Capture the Flag contests aren't specifically meant to educate: challenges can involve learning, perfecting, or expanding skills, but may or may not help the hacker with that process. This approachability gap between pwncollege and CTF/real security is something we often observe.
May 13, 2025 at 11:37 PM
Of course, some of this just needs moar #pwncollege (example: we're building Brown Belt material around tackling the security of complex targets), but there's still a fundamental education-to-non-education phase shift that our hackers must overcome. Our interim solution? CTF!
May 13, 2025 at 11:36 PM
It works! Those completing pwncollege and earning Blue Belts are sought-after, competent hackers. But they don't emerge omnipotent. Our material, while challenging, is designed to be solved and learned from. The real world isn't, leaving a gap that even blue belts must overcome.
May 13, 2025 at 11:36 PM
We made @pwncollege to increase the approachability of the hands-on cybersecurity skills that we LOVE (and that are critically needed in our society). We initially conceptualized it as a "first step" for bright Computer Science students looking to dip a toe into Cybersecurity.

Hello hackers! Another @pwncollege semester ends, continuing @ASU's @ace_inst's never-ending quest to revolutionize the way hackers learn to become productive members of the cybersecurity community. Read on to learn what this means for students and Capture the Flag! 🧵

And AZ CTF comes to a close! Congrats to the winners! And, of course, everyone can now tackle the chals on #pwncollege at: pwn.college/az-ctf-2...

Our minimum POC for the educational material is @ASU's @pwncollege, our platform to learn cybersecurity through hands-on, guided challenges. Again, we want to scale further (to other awesome platforms) as we go beyond the beta, but this gives us a familiar platform to start with.

#pwncollege, and the ease of creating custom dojos in it, provides a neat solution here! Building off of @sajjadium's amazing file preservation efforts, our researcher Pratham (prathamgupta36.githu...) got challenges running and tested in the dojo, and the CTF Archive was born!

We observe this in Capture the Flag: #pwncollege-trained players definitely have a leg up over a typical newcomer, but there is a missing link between even "applied" education and actual practice. The gap might be one of confidence or lack of exposure to variety, but it's there.

By 2026, ACE will launch a Masters in Applied Computer Security, expanding the pwn-heavy material of #pwncollege into a rounded graduate-level cybersecurity curriculum. As with our current material, all this will be free for use and adoption by other institutions and enthusiasts!
June 26, 2024 at 4:21 PM
Curriculum Gap: #pwncollege is great at teaching people advanced pwning, and there are platforms (see https://wargame.nexus) with other types of hands-on material, but there isn't an unified, applied cybersecurity curriculum that students can pursue in, say, a degree program.
