#precalc
Yep I precalc.

If my Russian Middle-School algebra teacher could see the D+ I got in college precalc, she’d be rolling around in the grave she’d dig for me

I literally refuse to teach math I can't score 95%+ on, even if I myself can do it passably because I know the ?'s are going to be an onslaught + I want to give them the right explanations from strong comprehension. Employers complained I wouldn't teach precalc bc I couldn't get a perfect score
In that last point therein lies the problem
Yesterday I spent the better part of my morning with some guy calling my position inaccurate
Turned out I was completely aligned with him from the beginning
I just can't anymore
My advice to would-be prescriptivists:

• Choose your battles.
• Don’t pick all the most classist “well, if you spoke Greek, you’d know this” battles.
• Know what you’re talking about before you talk about it.

any advice for getting back into the learning if chronic depression derailed my mathematics journey somewhere around trigonometry / precalc? I have been programming a lot so it's possible I've gotten used to similar concepts through a different framework so that might help.

crashing over 1 (one) problem in my precalc homework and yall. i want death.

I am in hell*

do you have a precalc google folder or something 👀

On a recent problem set I gave my precalc Ss this graph www.desmos.com/calculator/3... and had them recreate this gif drive.google.com/file/d/1DyMT...

messing with a new problem set for #precalc so if you want to steal the materials OR point out any errors, it will be appreciated!

[25-26] Precal PS 1 [Dickman]
Problem 1) a) There are different ways to combine trigonometric functions, for example, we have seen that sin(x)/cos(x) gives us the tangent function. Below is a graph of cos(x) multiplied by sin(x): ...

I don’t even know if we had calculators then.

I think my first calculator was algebra II / precalc. Even then, it was TI-83 or 82 only.

Deadass the only reason I think I'm not in precalc is because I needed to be refamiliarized with the formulas for the entry exam. I haven't looked at a coordinate plane in over a decade, but once I was shown "hey this is how you solve it" I understood it. I haven't scored below a 90 all semester.

The "too smart for GED math, but too out of practice to dive straight into precalc" Math course is such a weird space to be in. Like I'm very clearly displaying, I understand all the material when presented the formula, but share a classroom with people who don't know what the word "compute" means.

Nope, we have to take Precalc.
Might try to do 100 hours of private Azerbaijani lessons between January 2026 and April 2026 👀

Okay here's the sched:

Spring 2026: enroll in Precalc at Roger Williams, do Az lessons 2 hrs a week
May/June: Khan Academy Micro & Macro Econ to help me get practice (yeah I know Sal Khan is a tool, but his self-paced stuff is really effective for me)
Summer 2026: Honors Calc I @ RWU, 2 hrs Az

Most teachers (should be) able to teach most of the middle classes, but might lean "lower" or "higher."

For example, in a 20 year career I taught
Alg2 (or ~Math 3) and Calc nearly ever year
PreCalc ~10 times
Geometry ~5
Never taught Alg1, but i like to think i could...
November 1, 2025 at 6:01 PM
Traditionally there are 2 American approaches
Alg1>Geometry>Alg2 (then either PreCalc>Calc or Stats)
with each class being a year (covering 6-12 units, each unit over a topic)

Or an "integrated" approach, which throws them into a blender (still units)

I have a precalc test today and a chemistry exam tomorrow. I’m so cooked 😔

My daughter was pushed into crazy math- precalc in 10th grade. She hated it and it took a lot of tutoring to get her through. In 11th grade they pushed for calculus. We said no. She’s planning on going to a conservatory for college. None of us has ever needed more than algebra1 for life.

precalc will be the end of me i can't take this anymore

Statistics & probability needs to be covered a lot more thoroughly in middle/high school math and economics/civics classes.

If I was in charge of school math, it would be a lot more focused on practical daily applications & less on trigonometry or Precalc.

I hate precalc

a second practice test; the format is hopefully clear by now, but in case you wanna add it to your archives or improve it!

I may have failed precalc but I did take trig! (in a cursed way that wasn't with algebra II because I was on the slower paced math track) It seems to be mostly sufficient for this project at least.
