Attacking public education is a classic authoritarian tactic because schools teach critical thinking and foster pluralism. In my new book, "Why Fascists Fear Teachers," I talk about what this fight for public education means for our democracy.

It’s only distinct from the far right’s reactionary nostalgia in that the forces being blamed are neoliberalism and capitalism rather than liberalism and racial pluralism. But the resentful paranoia about the modern world is unmistakable on both sides, even if certain explanations are taboo here.

Look I'm not gonna pretend that I completely understand pluralism but that doesn't mean I think they're faking it jfc what a psycho

There are no shortcuts to being a good person, least of all "right belief" (including when that "right" belief is nonbelief).

Pluralism is the lifeblood of democracy. Get over yourselves, antitheists, and start prioritizing people's values and actions over their beliefs.

Signed, an atheist
Atheism is not a magic cure-all for anything, and prosteletizing is not welcome in my mentions.

It's lovely to be quoted in this article, exploring Vance's recent "I hope my not-really-Hindu wife converts to Catholicism" statement and what various responses tell us about the state of American pluralism, far-right alliances, and religion.

Not really. They are nationalists. Nationalism craves unitary collective identity through restored homogeneity (usually ethnic). I’m talking about a liberal democratic model that embraces pluralism but recognises that it only works if there are common norms, values sense of shared enterprise.

I lived there then & remember pix of your family in the papers! 😍

The EU is built on the foundation of democracy. 🇪🇺

But democracy needs care and renewal, especially when 70% of Europeans fear foreign interference in elections.

Today we present the European Democracy Shield and the EU Strategy for Civil Society.

3. Yes, they can do better. But they can never do "perfect" and, TBH, do we really want them parsing whether X is a death threat or a song reference?

Because those are the tactics that far-right used to break down norms of pluralism and toleration.

I wonder whether they can really separate BBC News from BBC everything else? As an institution, the BBC has a liberal bias (or at least a bias for pluralism and tolerance). I wouldn't say BBC News does.

Christianity today is little about spirituality or ethics — it’s about tribal preservation.

Many loudly waving the Christian banner do so, not out of devotion or conviction, but out of fear of losing cultural dominance.

Shameful Performative Piety!

Finding answers to these questions will not be easy, and our answers may lead us in very uncomfortable directions indeed. But if we are serious about our commitment to liberal democracy, pluralism, and rule of law, these are the only questions that matter.

but I don't know what the solution to this is, because very clearly we failed to build a society where free speech and pluralism could coexist - because free speech has brought pluralism to its knees in a fight for our lives!

I sincerely do not know the solution here, but there has to be one

Cute kids’ book about pluralism, via Zohran walking NYC
November 9, 2025 at 5:14 AM
By late 1989, all of these trends intersected as mass demonstrations erupted demanding pluralism, personal freedom, and human rights and thousands fled the country. By the time of Schabowski's press conference, the SED had lost control of the streets and could no longer suppress mass demos.

One last thing, I guess, about Zohran. Cities are under constant attack from MAGA. And Zohran's campaign felt like a love letter to cities: the pluralism, the communities, the neighborhoods, the activism, the people, and the culture that makes cities great. It was NY but could have been anywhere.

Here's the tl;dr thesis of that piece on Mlot-Mroz. Like Candace or Jack Posobiec, Mlot-Mroz's goal was to inject the fascistic "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" interpretation of modern politics into the US mainstream by rebranding it as "Patriotic, Christian anti-communism."

There is a meaning to the fact that Dreher cites here and it's this: religious pluralism is great! Qualified people can become leaders in our society without having to abandon or dissemble about their religious faith! Score one for pluralistic liberalism over laïcité or ethno-religious nationalism!
Rod Dreher is a racist.

He’s not an intellectual or thought leader or whatever BS.

He’s a gutter racist authoritarian, and there’s nothing else to him.

I think thats a naive view-point. It trades institutional stability and pluralism for emotional unity and short-term mobilization. The political pendulum aspect is very real with inevitable backlash even if it’s well-intentioned. In reality, it discourages stable ground for compromise or continuity.
