What level of plant nerd are my cohost and I? Well, we made a reaction podcast to Little Shop of Horrors based around the accuracy of its representation of carnivorous plants. #plantnerd #gardensky #littleshopofhorrors #halloween
Our Halloween analysis of Little Shop of Horrors is inching its way out to podcast platforms now...but if you've ever thought about becoming a patron, it's a good day to make the move! Our patrons got a slightly early, slightly extended cut this week. www.patreon.com/posts/early-...

Well it's that time of year where I need to except winter is here, and the netting has to come down the light waning and the grey dull days are here for the orchids to get through.

I grow these indigo rose black tomatoes not for their flavor or even their color, but for how well they remind me that tomato pants are firmly in the nightshade family.

It’s a restock day which is always fun, and sometimes disappointing when you see the ones who need some love. We’ll get em’ back into shape!

It’s separation day, and these chicks were ready to leave their mamas. We never mind working on Sundays when this is our office! 😁

Erythrina crista-galli (Cockspur Coral-Tree) blooming in my greenhouse. It's getting quite a trunk on it, finally, with a lovely braided-texture to the bark; I sowed the seed in 2009. I like how the buds are so beaky.

First “black” aka dark chocolate sunflower this year ! 🖤🌱 (link in comments if you’d like seed)
Fun fact: a sunflower isn’t actually one big flower, but thousands of tiny flowers bordered by a ring of petals 🌻

Conundrum: I know the risks of introduced species, yet I’m still captivated by their beauty - like this Spathodea campanulata or African tulip tree. Not native to Madeira, but undeniably striking.

Epiphyllum bloom season has arrived! This one is on a branch that stealth-infiltrated my Phlebodium fern; I love the combination.

Botanical dispatch from Madeira

There are 3 endemic orchid species on the island: Goodyera macrophylla, Dactylorhiza foliosa & Orchis mascula subsp. scopulorum. Here is D. foliosa, spotted today while walking the Levada do Alecrim...isn't she lovely?
