A shortpouch pygmy pipefish (Acentronura breviperula), doing a very good job of pretending to be a stick. Pic from Anilao.

Not all pictures are winners. This is a northern pipefish, straight on, with focus somehow on the tiny snail on top of its head. I mean, just look at those googly eyes 😂

Last week I spent a morning volunteering with Tees Rivers Trust , helping with their oyster reintroduction project - aside from the oysters, lots of creatures had used the cages as living and hiding places. Here are just a few of them (all safely returned.)

First dive at Loblolly Cove was surgy with bad visibility. I found a juvenile boxfish and a tiny lumpfish, but it was tough for photography. We relocated to Folly Cove and had much more pleasant conditions.

The pipefish put up a good fight, it looks like! I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels compelled to try to identify meal items 😅

Today’s creature from the deep

Ornate ghost pipefish
(Harlequin pipefish)
10-14 cm
4-5 inches

They are not actual pipefish but are related to them and seahorses.

They change colour to camouflage in their environment and hang upside down, surely to look like coral branches or sea grass.

Ayla Kesim rocks it with a talk challenging the Darwin-Bateman paradigm with the pipefish case! 🐟 This is a beautiful addition to the yesterday's artistic alternative presentation by her!

Northern Pipefish (Syngathus fuscus; top) are close relatives of seahorses, found along the east coast of NA. Essentially seahorses that are straightened out, pipefish also have pipette-like mouths that are great for sucking in small invertebrates, are covered in bony plates, (1/4) 🐙🐡🧪🐟 #SciComm
