I've got a heck of a lot that sort of thing in my stories. For research I get on the phone or internet and contact a scientist who knows about pharmacognosy.

Microcos paniculata (known as 'Fattashi' or 'Kathgua') has been used in Ayurveda and TCM for centuries. But does modern science back it up?

Sorry, that woman is the stupidest scientist I’ve ever seen. WTF was she trying to say about s cerevisiae yesterday? (I do know.) I’ve used yeast as a model organism. I’ve studied med chem, pharmacognosy, and microbiology at the graduate level. Stupidest and least coherent “science” I’ve ever seen.

Started my graduate studies in med chem and pharmacognosy. Studying hematology/thrombosis and thiol biochemistry/redox regulation. but the lab has an undercurrent interest in natural product pharmacology! 🌿

I had an epiphany during the hearing today. I’m pretty earthy crunchy. Long time. I’ve used herbs and other natural medicines, benefited from integrated medical care (alternative/western), studied med chem and pharmacognosy at the grad level.

I studied pharmacognosy. I’ve used naturally derived products as medicines. We all do. I believe some “alternative” medicine is safe and effective. But the grift in this field is epic. This may explain the attraction between the maha and maga tribes. purveyors of magic elixirs meet PT Barnum.

Not an epidemiologist, but started my grad studies in med chem and pharmacognosy (I know, right?). You are correct. I’ve been telling my husband, we should be prepared. Things will get ugly.

A Thought Worth Swallowing 💊

Modern medicine may come in capsules, but its roots are in the soil.

What’s your take? Is the future of medicine synthetic precision or natural synergy?

new terms I have discovered today related to my lorebuilding (ty wikipedia):

- physic gardens (medicinal herb gardens)
- pharmacognosy (herbal medicine/'crude' plant cures)
- floristics (plant geography, ecology/biodiversity)
- ethnobotany (sociology of plant/human interaction)

god I love learning

Unveiling Thymbra spicata’s Bioactive Compounds and Actions
In the ever-evolving field of pharmacognosy, the quest for discovering bioactive compounds from natural sources remains a focal point. A recent study conducted by researchers V. Unsal, L. Ercan, and C.G. Calıskan has delved into the rich chemical profile of Thymbra spicata L., a plant native to the Mardin region of Turkey. Renowned for its culinary and medicinal applications, this herb has emerged as a subject of intense scrutiny due to its potential therapeutic benefits.

Let's be careful about disparaging the term "natural products" please. It's the traditional name for a very valid area of drug discovery. I don't know about this guy, or company, and I know the term gets co-opted by snake oil salesmen (which is why I prefer "secondary metabolites" or pharmacognosy).

Nature is always beautiful!

Woolly Burdock

“It contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber that benefits gut health, and has been traditionally used to help regulate blood sugar and treat chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatism and arthritis.”
