The galaxy cutting dramatically across the frame of this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image is a slightly warped dwarf galaxy known as UGC1281. Seen here from an edge-on perspective, this galaxy lies roughly 18 million light-years away in the constellation of Triangulum (The Triangle). The bright companion to the lower left of UGC 1281 is the small galaxy PGC 6700, officially known as 2MASX J01493473+3234464. Other prominent stars belonging to our own galaxy, the Milky Way, and more distant galaxies can be seen scattered throughout the sky. The side-on view we have of UGC 1281 makes it a perfect candidate for studies into how gas is distributed within galactic halos — the roughly spherical regions of diffuse gas extending outwards from a galaxy’s center. Astronomers have studied this galaxy to see how its gas vertically extends out from its central plane, and found it to be a quite typical dwarf galaxy. A Deep View of Messier 83: The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - https://flic.kr/p/2kDUC3L
With nearly 70 hours of exposure I wanted to show the majestic barred spiral Messier 83 in all its glory. Visible here is the large halo extending far beyond the bright spiral arms, including sections of the northern stream that curves from the 10 o'clock position and outside the field of view, then enters the field again in the 2 o'clock position behind the bright blue star. The colourful spiral itself is filled with bright red HII regions, enhanced here with 4.25 hours of H-Alpha exposure. Intricate swirling dust lanes trace the spiral arms and merge in a central maelstrom near the bright warmly glowing core. To the left (East) of Messier 83 lies two smaller galaxies PGC 724525 and PGC 48132. These are much further away but show some interesting structures, particularly the upper one has several tidal tails that make it look like a tiny Star Wars TIE Fighter. Visible near the top right is the small and faint dwarf galaxy dw1335-29 which was confirmed to be a companion of Messier 83 in 2018. Messier 83 is classified as being an intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies. It is located in the southern constellation Hydra and is one of the show pieces of the southern sky, often referred to as The Southern Pinwheel. The distance to M83 is estimated to be some 15 million light years. M83 is an example of a 'grand design' spiral galaxy with strongly defined spiral arms and shows many pink and blue knots throughout the spiral structures. The pink regions are massiv...

In a recent study published in Cell Metabolism, a research paper provides the first evidence that sperm microRNAs act as carriers of epigenetic information, enabling the intergenerational transmission of paternal exercise capacity and metabolic health, thereby exerting profound effects on offspring development. The collaborative research team was led by Chen-Yu Zhang, Xi Chen, and Di-Jun Chen from Nanjing University, together with Tao Zhang from Nanjing Medical University, titled "Paternal exercise confers endurance capacity to offspring through sperm microRNAs." Throughout evolutionary history, exercise capacity has been fundamental to human survival, with our ancestors relying on sustained physical performance for hunting, migration, and predator evasion. However, with the advent of modern society, human lifestyles have undergone dramatic changes. Sedentary behavior and physical inactivity have become the norm, making exercise seem less essential for survival. Yet, a growing body of research reveals that the biological benefits of exercise continue to profoundly influence human health. Exercise not only enhances individual physical fitness and metabolic profiles—reducing the risk of chronic diseases—but also exerts deeper effects on the physiological and metabolic characteristics of future generations. Nevertheless, the mechanisms through which paternal exercise influences offspring phenotypes remain poorly understood. In this study, the authors demonstrate that offspring sired by exercise-trained fathers exhibit intrinsic exercise adaptability and improved metabolic parameters compared to those from sedentary fathers. Similarly, offspring of transgenic mice with muscle-specific overexpression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α)—a key enhancer of mitochondrial function—also show improved endurance and metabolic traits, even in the absence of the inherited PGC-1α transgene.
