After all, the deal was rehabilitation; some possibility of redemption is tangential at best. Husker wanted to get away from gambling, and Angel agreed to try sobriety — from drugs, he can’t lose alcohol simultaneously or he might too quickly crave coke and PCP again, amongst other things. Going cold turkey on hard drugs is fucking hard as it is when he still gets panic attacks and has nightmares that wake him in a trembling cold sweat, dreaming of Val busting through the hotel doors and perma-murdering Husk before he imprisons Angel in a sub-basement sex dungeon for the rest of eternity. Husk was a lifeline on those nights, someone he could tangle around and lie against or under, who would hold him on just the right side of tight and help him get some rest. Clearly Angel can’t be sober and dopeless just yet. Besides, Husk still makes the best drinks. Angel’s proud of him for cutting back on the booze already; Husk hasn’t binged in weeks.

But staying at the Hazbin meant finding a niche that works for them outside of Angel’s former profession and Husk’s former status as an overlord. So when Angel gave a rundown of Husk’s skills outside of a casino, Alastor seemed especially excited to hear he was an experienced bartender and offered the position immediately, ordering an Old Fashioned the moment Husker stepped foot back into the Hazbin Hotel a week later.

“He’s free, Dottie.”

Silence. It stretches a few seconds longer than Husk is willing to wait to get inside, and his paw hovers over the door handle.

“Jesus Christ, what are you waiting for, then?” Dottie finally scoffs. “Goddamn, get the fuck in there!” She hangs up on him, and if it were any other time, or maybe any other subordinate, he’d at least be annoyed about it. As it is, she’s right. He tucks his phone away, grinning with heat in his cheeks as he opens the door.

Or, he tries to. It’s locked. Right, very reasonable while there’s technically still a battle going on outside. Husk quickly finds his key and unlocks it, shutting the door behind himself and habitually locking it again.

Rehab will be hard enough, and he’s pretty sure Princess Blondie’s enthusiasm won’t be enough to account for all the shit he’s done in life — let alone down here in the pit — but a few weeks before shopping for an engagement ring, Angel had a pretty important revelation.

He’s madly in love with Husk, and what he wants more than anything else is just to be with him, wherever he is. Husk is just as skeptical of the redemption factor, but if he’s willing to try rehab for the very thing that’s made him an overlord? Well, shit. Maybe Angel can live without one of his own vices, too. It’s already been a little easier now that he’s not fucking people half the time he’s awake, and without Valentino to re-up the stress that compels him the strongest to use… how can he say no to trying again? He’s wanted to be sober before, life down here just made it untenable; Valentino practically ramped up the severity at work or plied him even more with his smoke and saliva whenever he gave it a shot. Maybe, just maybe, without all that bullshit tempting and holding him down, he could see Molly again, introduce her to the man who would even be his husband by then.

That fucking furry bastard. How dare he? How did he find them so quickly? Angel’s phone was abandoned after that sniper grunt killed the Hellhound driver and crashed his car. Valentino never even reached the basement with Angel, of which he’d had an entire sub-level converted to a permanent play dungeon! Vox hand-waved the idea when Val pouted about not having a personal one two weeks ago, before he’d even solidified his plans to get Angel back. Vox insisted on how much Valentino liked going to his clubs to play there, but eventually conceded when he realized it would make Valentino stop pouting. Then Angel went and got engaged, and Valentino knew exactly how to adapt to this change in their… predicament.

Of course, Angel will still be working. Valentino won’t leave good money on the table when he could keep sinners subscribing to his art, especially after Angel Dust makes a huge comeback after eight months of no new content. Demand will be through the roof, and they could promote the next film with a live show! Even if he’s never going to let his star leave Vee territory ever again, Angel will still make him money, like he was practically Heaven-sent to work for Val. Hell sure knew what it was doing when it gave that sassy bastard his gorgeous body. Sure, he’s a little knobbly and his ass is bony and flat, but what his inhuman figure lacks it makes up for in inhuman flexibility and natural sluttiness.

He ignores it all and speedwalks for the door, Dottie right behind him, tapping away on her phone.

“Relax, baby!” Angel says easily. “I been doin’ this shit since I was a kid!”

“Angel, I swear to fuck, if you get hurt—!”

“Aw!” Angel coos. “You worried about lil’ ole me, sweetcheeks? I can hold ‘em off, we’re on the way back anyway, okay?” he promises casually, and Husk wants to believe him, but they’re preparing for war, goddammit.

“Angel, Jesus Christ,” Husk grumbles, office door slamming as he busts out into the hall, picking up the pace toward the elevator. He should’ve gotten a balcony for his office, if he’d ever thought to let himself fly more often. He doesn’t really like to, still occasionally deeply disoriented by his demonic body. It’s not the same as having extra arms, but wings are extra appendages, and not everyone who gets stuck with them can even fly. Husk can, but it means both practicing with and feeling his wings beyond controlling their reactions and reflexes to maintain his poker faces. But ever since Angel started helping him preen and care for them, always happy to touch them or call them “pretty” and “lustrous” and “gorgeous—”

Well, he’s been appreciating them a lot more lately.

“Know a lot about local construction schedules?” Angel teases. Maybe they’re a mafia front, because it looks to him like either the street is perfectly fine or they just finished whatever asphalt flattening they were doing. A strange niggling in the back of his brain makes him question his own internal joke, his eyebrows dipping as he lowers his phone from scrolling Sinstagram and brings his legs down from stretching across the backseat to the car floor. He tucks his phone into his fluff and grabs either side of the front seats, leaning forward over the center console with a curious frown. He realizes each visible construction worker is Hellborn: imp, Greed shark, or some combination. Years of mafia living makes his body react before his brain knows what’s up, and Angel wordlessly smacks Kincaid’s upper arm a few times, eyes widening as his heart rate kicks up.

Fuck.

Gasping, Angel pops his head up from nuzzling Cherri’s crown and grins wildly at Fizzarolli in his fitted sequined suit, a deep blue with turquoise accents that complement his plus-one’s natural palette, Asmodeus hovering in the corridor with a bright green smile. Fizz tips down his heart-shaped shutter shades and bounces his eyebrows with a silly grin, his silver jester’s cap bells jingling softly as he stretches his robotic legs to spring forward and circle all three of them with his extending arms. He hums sweetly and Angel wriggles a top arm free to give his arms a gentle squeeze, heart full and head mounting with anticipation. When Fizz backs off to let them breathe, Pentious muttering something about how he’s a better constrictor than himself, Cherri tugs the snake aside with her to let the little imp get a proper, personal hug from Angel, who immediately crouches to do so.

“Heya, Fizz,” he greets, voice cracking. He almost tears up, the imp wrapping them both in his arms and squeezing comfortingly. He just did his makeup, he doesn’t have time to perfect it again! “Thanks for comin’, baby,” he says through a rough laugh. He glances up to see Ozzie bent halfway into the room, and decidedly rises, picking Fizz up with his lower arms and earning a giggle. He walks right into Ozzie’s open arms and relaxes as the Sin of Lust embraces both of them.

Husk nods, poker face in place as he observes dressed up and costumed demons milling around and heading toward the ballroom. Casting her wide-eyed gaze sideways to him, Dottie smirks. “I like the princess.”

“Good, cuz we’ll all be well-acquainted soon enough,” Husk mumbles. “Dottie,” he says slower, angling his head to look at her directly. She blinks owlishly but does the same, fuzzy ears twitching. “I really appreciate the work you’ve put into all ‘a this. Shit will get rough, but I want you to know that you’re important to me.” Dottie allows herself a tiny smile, eyes softening.

“It’s my home, too, y’know?” she says quietly, looking back out over the crowd. “Can’t let a bunch of dickweeds fuck it up without fightin’ back.” Husk flashes a dark grin and nods before reeling the expression in.

“Goddamn right,” he growls. “You seen Angel?”

Dottie glances at him again, the smile widening into a devious grin that makes Husk raise a long eyebrow. “I’m not telling.”

“He looks that good, huh?”

“He what?!” Angel yelps, caught between livid and thrilled, his heart racing. “It’s the first I’m hearin’ of it!” he complains, unfolding himself from his seat and setting his three free hands on his hips and waist. Heidi glances up at him from where she stands a few feet away, pointing at something on a clipboard for another crew member and raising an eyebrow at him. He waves her off lightly and strides for the stage door to step outside for a smidge more privacy in the open air. “What’s that handsome bastard up to?” he grumbles, squinting suspiciously at the bustle of set pieces and golf carts moving through the lot.

“Ah, yes, Her Highness came by earlier—,” Pentious begins, and Cherri interrupts.

“She said you should call her ‘Charlie,’ babe.”

“Y-yes, of course,” Pentious says awkwardly, clearing his throat. Angel would think it kind-of cute if he weren’t getting increasingly impatient. “Miss Charlie said the invitation extended to everyone at the hotel, so she came by to tell me all about it! They’re very excited to meet you, Angel dear!”

Heavenly damage is usually a sinner’s final death blow, if not an eternal disability like those that lost a limb or survived getting speared, and even a powerful, showboating overlord like the Radio Demon would need time to heal from an attack by the leader of the angelic army. So Vox spied on his tower, spied on the other residents, spied on — he can’t even believe it, either — the fucking devil himself. He watched them rebuild that dumb hotel even bigger, like suddenly people would come flocking after watching them get directly targeted for extermination. Sure Lucifer played the big hero or whatever the fuck, but you’d have to be stupid to get under that spotlight before knowing what they’re planning upstairs!

It did make great television, though.

Either way, Vox found himself obsessing over what Alastor was up to, reaming him online and across social media for his defeat, casually accepting Velvette’s coordinated “#memelordVox” trend with charm and fanfare after having her on as a guest on his late night show. His looped reaction video with the sound effects and commentary got a million views overnight when he released it the day after the battle. Alastor is a fucking laughingstock, memed to the Sloth Ring and back in every media format he hates. When Vox thinks of Alastor finding out, the face he’d make, the shapes he might take, roaring and trashing whatever room he might be in? Well, he can only get so hard.

On her heels is a much shorter winged woman with one eye, her long white hair accented with an oversized bow at the back. She doesn’t beam like the princess, arms folded, but she offers an almost apologetic smile.

“You must be Husker!” Charlie Morningstar announces, and already Husk is tired. She radiates the sort of energy one expects from a freshly graduated child development major clutching her shiny new teaching degree. It’s a lot, even at 2 PM. “Welcome to the Hazbin Hotel, where redemption is just a few months of hard work and self-improvement away!” An optimist, huh? He’s never met her before, but he’s heard the Princess of Hell is a bleeding heart with the eagerness of a golden retriever; so far, so accurate. He puts a hand up, shaking his head as several demons around them gawk less than subtly on their way out.

“All due respect, Your Highness,” Husker says evenly, tipping his red and gold die-topped cane out to his side, anchored by his foot. “I ain’t here for that.”

He’s unfamiliar with the hellish film industry, this kind of scheduling snafu could happen all the time and be as innocent as anything else in Hell. In the same vein, it could be just as fucked up as anything else in Hell, and if Angel was acting “off,” surely something happened between leaving The Stardust and arriving on the studio lot, scheduling mishap or no? Should he ask, or is he being paranoid and asking him about it or showing up on set now would piss Angel off and make him feel babied, micromanaged, or untrusted? Fuck.
