Michael Foley spoke about our use of zines in the collective intelligence workshops. It landed because it’s simple and human. Zines let people express what they actually think and feel, not just what they think they’re supposed to say in a workshop. It cuts through the performance layer. You get honesty, nuance, humour, frustration, hope. People make sense of open research in their own language. That’s where the real insight sits. We’re not collecting data. We’re listening to people making meaning together. If that’s the kind of research culture you care about, stay with us.

Louise reminded the room that open research is not just infrastructure or compliance. It is trust, care, and responsibility. Zine-making as a tool for Collective Intelligence At ENGAGED, we’ve been experimenting with creative, participatory methods for gathering insights, and one of the most rewarding approaches has been zine-making. During our collective intelligence workshops, participants created their own zines to reflect on open research, share lived experiences, and express challenges and hopes for the future of engagement. Zines offered something unique, they allowed for personal reflection, emotional expression, and storytelling that traditional data collection often misses. They made complex ideas about research culture visible, tangible, and deeply human. The results were powerful: a collection of authentic voices that speak to what open, collaborative research feels like as much as what it means.
