Labour Today people are going on strike to protect the public services NZers rely on. Labour stands with them. The strike happening today is the direct result of Christopher Luxon and his government choosing to underfund our schools and hospitals. No one wants to strike. People do it because they’ve been left with no other choice. We unequivocally support the nurses, doctors, midwives, dentists, healthcare workers, and teachers who have made the difficult decision to take this stand. Christopher Luxon is out of touch and making our health and educatin systems worse. He has made his priorities clear: handing out massive pay rises to boardroom directors and millions to tobacco companies, instead of investing in the services we all rely on. This strike action is about safeguarding the basics that keep our hospitals and schools running - safe staffing, fair pay, and decent working conditions. Rt. Hon. Three of us in Aotea Square with our colourful signs: nibling’s says “TEACHERS ARE THE BEST”, mine says “Things are so bad even the freelancers are here” (and on the back, “If you can read this, thank a teacher and pay all essential workers properly”), and sister’s says “Happy to be a member of this cult(ure)” Little kids near us with beautiful hand-drawn signs in rainbow colours and embellished with love hearts: “Teachers Rock! Pay them more!” “We love our teachers!” “I love teachers” etc. A chaotically brilliant sign that reads: “If Robin White had not been a teacher at Mana College then Noel Crombie wouldn’t have gone to Art School and there’d be no Split Enz and this is massive!” A fraction of the crowd, with a big sign visible that reads “don’t make me use my teacher voice!”
