German revolutionary Robert Blum: born 10 November 1807, executed Vienna 9 November 1848

That was back when "violence" meant physical harm rather than words, and "revolution" and "resistance" were not just slogans: a matter of life and death

Today's #IronAge #coin for #FindsFriday: a gold quarter stater of the Osismii, max 15mm diameter, with an eagle? gryphon? head on the horse, in place of the usual human head. From Le Câtillon, Jersey. #archaeology #numismatics

Although unearthed from Mount Batten, Plymouth, this coin originated in Dorset. I saw this in The Box and immediately thought of @durotrigesdig.bsky.social - some numismatics for #HillfortWednesday

Ancient Coin of the Day: I’ve been drawn back to Galba, with a look at some of his bronze coin issues, starting with this sestertius of late AD 68 with Honos and Virtus. #ACOTD #Numismatics #Galba 🧵🏺

Another lovely #IronAge #coin for #FindsFriday - this is a gold stater of the Osismii (western Brittany), with a winged figure beneath the horse holding a torc. Probably early first century BC. Found in the Le Catillon II hoard in #Jersey in 2012 #archaeology #numismatics

Who had the largest nose in numismatic history?
I'm particularly impressed by the schnoz on the Parthian king Mihrdāt/Mithradates II (r. 124–91 BCE), but there must be bigger.

Trump on a coin? Caesar tried that—Rome fell soon after
A proposed one-dollar coin featuring US President Donald Trump is causing ructions across the political divide. It’s also provoking discussion in the world of ancient Roman numismatics (coin studies). The proposed coin depicts Trump in profile on one side (the obverse). On the other side (the reverse) the president raises his fist in defiance, accompanied by the words “

Can't let #FindsFriday go past without another fine Iron Age coin. This is a base silver stater attributed (probably wrongly) to the Veneti, in southern Brittany. Diameter 22mm. Note the recumbent figure below the horse - what is he holding? #archaeology #numismatics 🏺

🌊🍇 From the shores of Cilicia — a masterpiece of ancient artistry. This silver stater of Nagidos unites two powers: Dionysos, god of wine and revelry, and Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.

A while since I posted a nice Iron Age #coin, so for #FindsFriday here's a silver quarter stater loosely attributed to the Baiocasses in Normandy. From the Le Câtillon hoard, #Jersey. Fine example of the human-headed horse on the reverse which dominates the coinage of this region. #numismatics 🏺

Some Renaissance folio-sized fine book bindings in my library:

(NB bindings are not my main interest, due the high added cost relative to my perceived value)

Two original in blind stamped vellum & leather; one later in an early vellum MS; one later but in 1500s style embossed & stamped leather

Know the feeling! Today cataloguing an own-library book, ancient Roman customs and extant monuments, Flavio Biondo 1392-1463, written 1444-c.1460, first published in manuscript from 1444 on, first print ed 1477, this 1503 can only locate part of the book online (Wellcome coll) not in standard cats

Currently perusing William Dalrymple’s chapter on Berenike but definitely psyched to read @caeliambulator.bsky.social’s chapter on numismatics and Sunil Gupta’s in Gandharan art. Side note this Gandharan weight with Hercules is the best: www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...

Languages are on my list of realistic-but-best-not-to-go-there-in-a-game things like disease and numismatics.

That last is particularly sad for me as someone who spent some time dealing more or less professionally with ancient economies. But IME, players
