I may be totally wrong, I dont work in 3d graphics, but my understanding is not that they actually worry about theoretical topology as much as doing the numerics on the real model faces super fast.

the original story of my life was boy obsessed with math falls into a delightful career doing wonderful things with numerics and differential equations and geometry to make film vfx look beautiful, got married to his first sweetheart and had wonderful kids to whom he was a dedicated parent, yay!

It is hard to imagine that fundamental numerics can be improve... but the face centre calculation in #OpenFOAM-dev has been corrected, improving the convergence on cases with distorted cells: the residuals for the motorbike tutorial are halved!
