Still, I was thinking of some of the "fill in the blanks" parts, such as "these people were probably at least 1/2 Norse given the century and surname and it was in Norfolk and... etc"

Same branch as my great-great whatever who was executed in Salem, actually.

And when I say "our mythology", I don't mean specifically Old Norse mythology, but also the accumulations of post-pagan Norwegian & Nordic history. Religions might be transitory, but stories tend to have a life of their own.

The word "Yule", now associated with the winter holiday period, derives from the historic Norse festival of Jól, which was based around the winter solstice. Modern Christmas traditions recall bygone midwinter celebrations like the Roman holiday of Saturnalia, which involved feasting and gift-giving

Yes, pagan Norse/Germanic Yule (Jól) traditions included ritual sacrifices (blót) of animals and, according to some historical accounts and archaeological finds, sometimes humans, often around the midwinter period, to honor gods (like Thor/Odin),

As ogham is mostly used for recording Old Irish inscriptions it seems more discrete than Old Norse and Old English to me, as I'm familiar with those languages. Fortunately we're now well served with very detailed online databases for both runic and ogham inscriptions, so you can follow your interest

QRP to reintroduce yourself !

I am Jessica and I create jewelry inspired by Norse mythology. On my other networks, I talk to you about Nordic paganism in all sincerity, by going through the 'newage' box.

Trolls in Nordic folklore and Norse mythology being described as:

"trolls dwell in isolated areas of rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings."

One more weird thing that came from Ray Harryhausen watches is the discovery that the Kraken is a *norse* myth (Greek: Perseus fought Cetus/Ketos)

As far as i can tell, Clash of the Titans (1981) seems to be culprit for modern associations with Greek Mythology.

Maybe even with a Norse logo on it since he is the God of Gods. ❜

He smiled and kissed Odin on the head a few times while he held him in his arms. There was so much love in his heart when Anastasia wanted a pet.

❛ I'm okay with paying next time.

Welcome to the Feast of Dragons

Each course in this feast is inspired by a different dragon from mythology — Norse, Chinese, Japanese, Mesoamerican, and Greek.

A story told slowly, one plate at a time. Dragons welcome.

Janet of Janet's Fosse (nr Malham) is also said to be an alias of Jenny, Jennert or Jinny. A water hag. A theory that the "Norse Queen of the Faries" story is just half the tale. Faries can be much darker beings than popularly portrayed. Think of the fairy folk in Rossetti's "Goblin Market"...

Indeed it would! 😃 The idea that this is Norse for "inheritance (or souvenir???) from Orkney" is from me, by the way.

I am babbling about language here, and it is not greek

but HAPpy, unHAPpy, HAPhazard, etc all those Hap words use germanic / norse roots of Hap which means things that happen to you / the outside / the fates …

thus Happy is lucky fate

Former is Old Norse for secondary settle ment/outlying settlement; latter is term for a water meadow or a damp meadow next to a river or stream. So very early medieval origin!
