Is there a Global Aggregate Depreciation?
What is Economic Reality? Is reality what we think it is, and how do we decide what to think? How do, and have, Economists decided what to think, and what to tell us? The Aggregate Demand is a commonly used concept in Macroeconomics. Curiously the Net Domestic Product was mentioned fairly often in comparison back in 1959. It has been a while. The Net Domestic Product, NDP, is the Gross Domestic Product, GDP minus Depreciation. Before 1990 the Gross National Product was mentioned much more often than the Domestic so the Net National Product appeared more often than the Net Domestic Product. But what is that DEPRECIATION??? The term "Aggregate Depreciation" exists but it barely rises above nonexistence. It's greatest mention was in 1959 and the value is preceded by Six Zeros at the time. Notice that "Demand Side Depreciation" was not found so that Aggregate Depreciation should be the Supply Side only. If you read the description of the Net Domestic Product in any economics textbook the depreciation is specified as Capital Goods and hence the Supply Side. The term Supply Side Depreciation is not used so Aggregate Depreciation effectively means Supply Side Depreciation and the consumer depreciation of the Demand Side has been effectively erased. This becomes an issue of what is "Economic Reality". Automobiles and air conditioners owned by consumers wear out and must be replaced eventually. But it appears as though the Economic Reality which economists chosen to measure and specify does not correspond with the physical reality that consumers must live in. The Reality of Economists hardly heard any mention of the Net Domestic Product actually. All that matters is GDP which being increased constitutes Growth. Replacing a worn out car just leaves the consumer with the same number of cars. In case of Planned Obsolescence that would mean running to stay in the same place. A stylish form of Slavery. .

In 1976 I started reading a Samuelson's Economics textbook, looking for something that did not make sense. Eventually I got to NNP, NET National Product.

It took up half of a page in a 600 page book. It had Capital Depreciation but not Consumer Depreciation.

The same crap with NDP 50 years later?🤔

The year before I had discovered that economists did not subtract the Depreciation of Durable Consumer Goods from NNP, Net National Product.

Now it is Net Domestic Product. How much has the world lost on Automobile Depreciation in 48 years?
There is a Gross and there is a Net! Surprise, surprise! However something has been missing the Net for decades, which is the point of this discussion. Long ago Karl Marx used the word 'depreciation' 100+ times in Das Kapital. However he and everyone else spent their lives without automobiles to depreciate. So Marx was writing about the depreciation of Capital Goods. He mentioned "Rolling Stock" a number of times, that is Trains. Locomotives and rail cars wore out and had to be repaired and replaced and this was all part of the cost of doing business. The First Automobile turned up in Germany two years after Marx died. It was nothing but a rich man's toy but it was the shape of things to come. The Great Horse Manure Crisis of 1894 came and went for large cities without ceasing to be a Crisis. Horses produce 25 pounds of manure per day and having 100,000 of them in a Great City like New York or London tended to make them not so great. Henry Ford finally presented the solution in 1908 with his Model-T. In 1912 the number of cars in NY City passed the number of horses. History proceeded without Marx to The Great War that would eventually be demoted to World War I, the Roaring Twenties to be stifled by the Great Depression with lots of hoopla about Economics. Thus enters John Maynard Keynes and the Gross National Product. It was Domesticated in the 90s becoming GDP instead of GNP. The difference does not matter to this discussion. The Deficit Spending used to fight WWII thereby lifting the US economy from the pits was taken as proof that Keynes was not talking trash. So GDP ruled everyone's thinking. Consumerism exploded with television in the 50s along with the depreciation that everyone ignored. The Great Acceleration has become the Great Depreciation and experts are still trying to ignore it. I think it is becoming more difficult. Economists do not say much about Demand Side Depreciation. I have never seen NDP expressed graphically in an Economics textbook.
