Who divided New Guinea?

In late 1800s, European empires carved it up:
Netherlands took the west (today West Papua), Germany the northeast, Britain the southeast.
They drew a straight line — 141st meridian — for colonial convenience.
No Papuans were consulted.
#WestPapua #PNG #NewGuinea
Today it divides the same Papuan peoples into two states, fuels militarisation, forces refugees into PNG, and locks in the unresolved injustice of West Papua. A colonial line that never made sense — and still doesn’t. #NewGuinea #WestPapua #PNG

Why the 141st meridian border in New Guinea exists — and why it’s a problem #NewGuinea #WestPapua #PNG

A straight line cut through New Guinea because colonial powers wanted an easy map, not justice. The 141st meridian was drawn with a ruler, ignoring Indigenous lands, cultures, and families

PNG and Australia essentially light a match under the region, then draw a circle around themselves hoping nobody notices. The colonial‑era ghost isn’t dead — it just got a new PR campaign. #PNG #AusPol #WestPapua #NewGuinea
