Waxcap 40 - Blushing Waxcap (Neohygrocybe ovina). This one's my favourite! A chunky species, often early fruiting and restricted to the best sites. Cap is grey to black and often splitting, resembling cowpats. The gills and stipe are a beautiful grey and the gills bruise red!!

Waxcap 33 - Nitrous Waxcap (Neohygrocybe nitrata). The name comes from the smell, very strong of swimming pool chlorine. Cap colour varies from grey to nearly black and overall size is also really variable. The stipe is generally a bit chunky. An uncommon species.

Whoops, missed one. So for Waxcap 17 here's a special one!
Dingy Waxcap (Neohygrocybe ingrata).
A chunky brown/grey species. Has a faint chemical smell and bruises slightly pink. Cap and stipe are dry and the stipe can be pretty bulbous.

Hygrocybe ovina (Neohygrocybe ovina)
IUCN: VU, Czechia: EN (and proposed for legal protection)
CHEGD grassland species, threats same as for previous N. nitrata. I also know it from the same locality (only one for me, I've seen them just once).

Neohygrocybe nitrata (cont.)
I know it from a single locality - edge of larger meadow area, two small strips separated by rows of trees. It seems this small part was a grassland since at least 50's by old map. With other rare sp. - P. metapodium, N. ovina, C. flavipes

Another of the topnotch Waxcaps is the Blushing Waxcap (Neohygrocybe ovina). This year it is fruiting in a smaller size than I normally get here, but that earthy mix of browns and greys and the bright red colour that quickly results from bruising are distinctive.

It's #mushroommonday, here's looking back on some of the star grassland fungi I saw this year 😍 Butterscotch and Blushing Waxcaps are both species I'd wanted to meet for a while. Whilst the beauty of Violet Coral and gorgeous smell of Mealy Meadowcap always make for an exciting day in the field ☺️

More pictures from a brilliant 2024 Waxcap season, all from the species rich grasslands of Mt Edgecumbe Estate, Cornwall.

First is Yellow-foot Waxcap (Cuphophyllus flavipes, so named because of the yellowish base), Blushing Waxcap (Neohygrocybe ovina), and Citrine Waxcap (Hygrocybe citrinovirens).

I’m not sure, perhaps Neohygrocybe nitrata?

Perhaps not the prettiest Waxcap but one of the rarer species. Nitrous Waxcap - Neohygrocybe nitrata. It does have a sharp chemical smell reminiscent of a swimming pool 🍄📷
