Nah, try again: I am really amazed to find that there is a band in this New-Neo- Wave English music bag that makes the build-up worth ignoring, 'Cause it's hard, you know, being bright and teenaged and fresh out of the isolation of Ireland; trying to stay focused on the path, so to speak, when all the paid observers coo that you have already arrived. The four members of U2 are under siege. It's still early enough for incredulousness: "In the Village Voice, they did this story," marvels guitarist the Edge, a prodigy with no formal training.” The analysis—well, I just couldn't imagine where they came up with all this stuff about fiftbs. Apparently we use that interval a lot. Anyway, they did this three-page thing all based on those fifths that we use so much. I didn't even knou that. I read it and said, Do l really do all that? God, Ill have to frame this when I get home*." And so it goes. He's equally astute and non-accusatory about the band's constant association with two other neophyte new-music British bands, Teardrop Explodes and Echo and the Bunnymen. Without putting either in an unflattering light, the slight young gentleman gives a gentlemanly sidestep to the broad sweep. "We all came out at the same time; I think that's the main reason for the comparisons." Then comes the pleasant surprise of Edge offering a brief run-down of what he likes about those two bands, as well as genre mates Original Mirrors, Psychedelic Furs, and Joy Division, the latter with which they had a producer in common for a short while. There are undeniable common threads running through the music of these young U.K. groups that goes past historical positioning. All of them seem to place great value on finding new points of symbiosis between the direct, rudimentary songs and presentations of Sixties groups and the technological obsessions of their direct Seventies predecessors. The nihilist undertones of punk are more or less disposed of, while the insistent energy remains as a fundamental fuel. Heavy but deft drumming anchors billowing layers of sound; from one band to the next in different variations, and there are no lead instruments per se. Keyboards (which U2 does not use), synthesizers, bass, six-string and 12-string guitars switch off shaping melodic and metric soundscapes. Most of the lead voices are high, wiry baritones. Lyrics tend to be heavy on post-art rock metaphor, giving a visual and philosophical verite to existential crisis points and, of course, personal relationships. It's still much too carly to tell about creative potential and sheer staying power, that's another thing they all share. But Edge's freshman year ready-set-go isn't naive at all. These next months are pivotal for U2 for a zillion reasons, not the least of which is the end of their isolation in Dublin. When they first got together in 1976, lead singer Bono's older brother had tapes of early Beatles and Beach Boys that served as very general sign-posts. Radio and passing fashions don't retain. (Note: a line or word is cut off here in the printed newspaper.) It would be a damn shame if U2's entry into fame and globe-trotting changed the timbre of the conversations each member hears in his head, or the musical ones they have with each other. One gets the impression from Edge that the songwriting is an instinctive and collective process; that the education of visual and tactile experience is very deliberate, but still very free to lead the songs with its own alchemy. Leaving plenty of room for the unspoken, Edge gives detailed explanations for why U2 sounds like, well, U2: "Our intent is to take the three-piece format [guitar, bass, drums] to its fullest potential. It pleases me that so many people say the LP (Boy] takes time to grow on them; that shows we succeed at trying to make cach cut rich. One of the things I try to do is interweave guitar parts and lines betueen the rhythmsof the bass and the drums." He waves one slender hand through an ineffable thought. "Like a tapestry." There is a major influence to be recognized in shows like U2 did at Sam's last week-the carly Who had just this kind of working place between complicated musical aspirations and the boot-scuffing kineticism ofa dialogue with a packed house. I hate to join the Greek chorus of praise for this band, but their live show confirms that they have a bit of "it," alright, at least for now. There is intelligence, unique perspective, historical validity, a willingness to risk, a sense of sweat-scaked fun; a critic's litany to near great-ness. Maybe a year from now I’ll run across this clip in my file and hang my head, once again a sucker for the power of the moment. But that's okay. Undoubtedly Edge will be sitting in some pub, rain pounding outside. having a chat with a future that these moments have rightly promised him.
