I have been thinking about the 1876-78 multiyear droughts and the associated spike in global temperatures. What can this tell us about the range of variability and can warming enhance this variability? journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

Solidarity! We have people who just shoot off fireworks all over the place. You July, in California where we have multiyear droughts and fires that burn down entire cities. These people are everywhere.

Droughts are not just a feature of the western US.

There's Some pretty bad droughts going on in Maine, Ohio, Florida and Georgia right now. Georgia had two multiyear droughts already this century and were discussing running out of water in Atlanta.

Climate change is shrinking surface and groundwater supplies in the southwestern U.S. Higher air temperatures are increasing evaporation rate from rivers and streams and intensifying drought. Mexico is also experiencing multiyear droughts and heatwaves.

There's a new study in Science detecting increased multiyear droughts from 1980 to 2018. I didn't cover, but did see that their underlying precip data came from a downscaled weather reanalysis.

Genuine Q: How much faith would you put in these trends given that origin? (It gave me pause.)
