Keep in mind that the MPAA guidelines changed significantly over the years. Just about every pre-2000s animated Disney film got a G rating. But even for the standards back then Hunchback deserved a PG.

The MPAA and movie ratings, Safe Harbor Hours, Parental Advisory labels, TV ratings, the ESRB, parental controls, kids figuring out the Wifi password was the name of the dog.

Now we need the government to get everyone to upload their ID on the internet so kids don’t learn big gay exists.

The MPAA has had weird thoughts over the years to what rating they give. Violence, cussing, and nudity can get you a x rating from some, pg13 from others.

I'll say this much for "FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S 2" - the 80s/90s MPAA (which often tried/pretended to "care" more about intent/psychology/etc than just "what you saw") would have given the opening scene of this an R-rating. They might've just said "No, you can't." Actual nightmare stuff.

I imagine the MPAA is just one dude named Mr. Hollywood and the reason they are R rated is because he gave it a thumbs up and said Rad

The MPAA comparison is particularly delicious, but the whole thing is great. Thank you for your service.

Bryan Fuller's DUST BUNNY is a charming gateway horror movie about a girl who hires a hitman to deal with the monster under her bed. It also happens to be rated-R.

The filmmaker explained to the @horrorqueers.bsky.social why the MPAA landed on that rating in a chat:
Bryan Fuller Explains Why Gateway Horror Movie ‘Dust Bunny’ is Rated “R”
“Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller’s utterly charming feature directorial debut, Dust Bunny, earned an “R” rating from the MPAA last month, a surprising move considering its youthful lead and wholesome g...

Chris Person takes a look at Horses, "the indie game that is too scandalous for either Valve or Epic, is only beyond the pale if you're not familiar with any other art form" (quoted from the article blurb).

fuller is very careful to emphasize that this is something the MPAA pulls specifically with independent features, but it feels relevant to bring up that perhaps the anita baker institute for you can’t show children that may have an axe to grind against a long time, out, gay man.

Piracy is activism against the RIAA and MPAA. It is not activism when its authors and books.
Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

Weirdly small amounts of mashed potatoes, and is that dressing to the southeast? Is that a bowl of a breakfast cereal made to look like croissants?
And honestly, the MPAA was like "nope! we don't need to see much of that mac n cheese. Crop it."
Karoline Leavitt's Thanksgiving spread. Please dissect.

Granted, I maintain all my writing available for free online even when published in print and that informs my views, but it’s been weird seeing ostensibly-lefty authors internalize the MPAA/RIAA position we all knew was bullshit back in Napster times that every instance of piracy = a lost sale

Wild to me there's backlash here bc when I was a kid I took acting lessons from a professional combat coordinator & it seems obv you'd have one to make sure THAT part's safe but realistic.

i tried to look up the first credited intimacy coord but the MPAA took its credits database down 10y ago!?
Do Intimacy Coordinators Still Have a Place in Hollywood in 2025?
The rise of intimacy coordinators on film sets was seen as one of the most tangible wins of the MeToo movement. So why has the tide started to turn?

I know the MPAA abandoned X because they couldn't copyright it and that's why they brought in NC17.
I doubt they'd bring back X for him.
November 24, 2025 at 9:32 PM
Brady Corbet's movie will be so dirty they'll have to bring back a rating that hasn't been used in 35 years. The smut will be so powerful that the NC-17 won't be sufficient, the MPA will revert to being the MPAA and revive the X. Hammer pants will also be back in style.
Brady Corbet’s next film will be X-rated, shot entirely on 70mm, and span three centuries.

I’m leaning toward Lizza fabricated that detail, because c.2005, John Waters of all people said he doesn’t know anyone who has done it

The BBFC/MPAA/censors around the world have a very flawed view of violence.

If nobody dies and there's no blood, then anything goes.
November 24, 2025 at 4:17 PM
while The Conjuring I think is a great horror movie (although feels a little dated after 15 years of people copying it), it never was THAT scary. it's definitely scary! but like my wife that hates horror movies watched it just fine. the MPAA was wild on that one
November 21, 2025 at 11:27 PM
But also, most importantly I think, the movie started a battle in the industry over the “Production Code” aka The Hays Code. And the movie’s wins in this battle proved to be a major step toward eliminating that code.
