NASA's Aqua satellite passed over the Eastern Pacific Ocean's Hurricane Fernanda as it continued to track toward the Central Pacific. The storm continues to move over cooler waters and is on a weakening trend. On July 17, NASA's Aqua satellite provided a visible-light image of Hurricane Fernanda as it continued moving through the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The storm's cloud pattern is remarkably circular with a pronounced ring of cold brightness temperatures indicating very intense inner-core convection. Terra MODIS image around 17:30 UTC on 23 Oct 2015, the same as in the parent post but plotted by me and zoomed in slightly. The storm is shown at maximum intensity with 185 kt winds and 872 hPa pressure (as of 12:00 UTC). Longwave infrared image from the 17:31 UTC Oct 23 MODIS overpass. The inner core has two distinct areas of colder brightness temperatures (stronger convection) opposite each other across the eye, one band in the north associated with the flow coming offshore from Mexico, and another in the southern eyewall.

October 19, 2005: Hurricane Wilma becomes the most intense tropical cyclone ever observed in the Atlantic basin in terms of minimum pressure at 882 hPa.
Aqua MODIS longwave infrared satellite image of Category 5 Hurricane Wilma a few hundred km northeast of Honduras, around 07:11 UTC on October 19. The storm is shown in the latter stage of its explosive deepening, with an extremely small "pinhole" eye already having formed surrounded by a circular ring of incredibly cold cloud tops below -80C, indicating extremely intense convective activity in the inner core. NOAA-14 AVHRR visible RGB image of Category 5 Hurricane Wilma at 14:28 UTC Oct 19 as the storm was passing a few hundred km NNE of Honduras and approaching the Yucatan peninsula, with its extremely small, distinct eye standing out. The monster winter storm that brought icing to the U.S. southeast moved northward along the Eastern Seaboard and brought snow, sleet and rain from the Mid-Atlantic to New England on February 13. A new image from NOAA's GOES satellite showed clouds associated with the massive winter storm stretch from the U.S. southeast to the northeast. Data from NOAA's GOES-East satellite taken on Feb. 13 at 1455 UTC/9:45 a.m. EST were made into an image by NASA/NOAA's GOES Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The clouds and fallen snow data from NOAA's GOES-East satellite were overlaid on a true-color image of land and ocean created by data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites.The image showed that the clouds associated with the storm were blanketing much of the U.S. East Coast. At 3:11 a.m. EST, a surface map issued by the National Weather Service or NWS showed the storm's low pressure area was centered over eastern North Carolina. Since then, the low has continued to track north along the eastern seaboard. By 11 a.m. EST, precipitation from the storm was falling from South Carolina to Maine, according to National Weather Service radar. By 11 a.m. EST, the Washington, D.C. region snow and sleet totals ranged from 3" in far eastern Maryland to over 18" in the northern and western suburbs in Maryland and Virginia. TLDR. satellite, rainfall, stream gauge data all tell you something different about floods and if you pick one for index insurance- that matters! the AI based satellite product we developed (MODIS+S1) has lower uncertainty (would could make premiums cheaper) and pays out sooner than others

Mount Agung continues to erupt, ejecting a volcanic plume of gas and ash over the Indonesian island of Bali. The ash is visible amidst midday clouds in this false-color image, acquired on November 29, 2017, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite. The image uses a combination of shortwave infrared light and natural color, making it easier to differentiate between ash, clouds, and forest. The plume appears to rise from two vents in the volcano's crater. Just as the plume's sulfur dioxide levels can vary, so too can the amount of steam and ash. A whiter plume indicates the presence of more steam, while a darker plume indicates more ash. Volcanic steam, lava, and ash tend to have local and regional effects, while gas emissions can sometimes have global consequences. Continuous activity of 🌋in Saunders is (S. Atlantic). MODIS image of a long #volcanotrack with a good #sentinel overpass (line). The latter shows how the puffs from the top ascend and mix with existing clouds which become brighter. It is most obvious in NIR bands, not so much in VIS bands.

On the morning of September 6, 2010, a wildfire known as the Fourmile Canyon Fire broke out just west of Boulder, Colorado. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites captured these images of the Fourmile Canyon Fire and its resulting smoke plume on September 7th and 8th. The red outline corresponds with the unusually high surface temperatures associated with an active fire.
