Matthew was a skilled photographer and freelance journalist from Ireland. His heart was always drawn to the Earth's beauty, immersed in Mother Nature's flourishing forests and blooming gardens so graciously offered. Matthew had always dedicated his life to the preservation of nature via media awareness. When apathy ruled the world, the flora welcomed him with an indescribable sense of home. Despite being born many years after the first Maelstrom struck New York, his childhood was full of research into this supernatural event. At the age of 20, he set out on his way to America, not only to inspect the new blooming lifeforms in their birthplace, but to run away from the heartless people he once called “family”. Looking through the forests of New York, he came into contact with the remnants of the Maelstrom– still surging with energy. A burst of magic had granted Matthew an eerie gift: the ability to perceive the spiritual realm. He heard everything that hurt them, and the ghosts knew everything that illed Matthew. His life remained tormented by the desperate cries of dead souls. It broke his sensitive heart. He locked himself up in his house, too afraid to see the light of day. He sat back as he watched his body turn pale, slowly becoming phantasmal. Once he stopped to reflect on his life and the livelihood of the dead, he came to a fortunate realization: these ghosts lived the rest of their miserable lives running away from their deaths, vengeful and heartbroken; unable to cope with what happened in the past. He empathized with their conflict. Comfort was what saved his life once before, and it would certainly save theirs, too. Though he vowed against violence, Matthew found himself fighting—not for his own return to normalcy. No, he fought for their freedom. His only wish was to soothe their sorrow, to guide them into the comforts of the afterlife. For no soul should ever be bound by torment. A concept he knew well, and one he hoped to return himself to.
